| Success!! Scientists have found the cause of Riverwood's water problem. The fish kill has been caused by the disease of "gas bubble disease." Do not panick. This disease will not harm humans in any way. It only affects marine organisms. You are probably wondering what is "gas bubble diesease" and how it affects fish. This is a common question. Gas bubble disease is caused by supersaturated water containing ordinary oxygen and nitrogen. These gases are what you and I breathe in every day in order to survive. When to much of these gases are trapped in water, the fish take in the water through their gills and the gases form bubbles in the gills. This bubble decreases the amount of oxygen the fish can take in causing it to sufficate. | ||||||||||||||||||
| by gravity. The release water froms fuzzes and traps water as it flows into the water supersaturating the water. There are ways to fix this problem. They can be found on the dam section of this page. During the investigation large amounts of selenium were found in the water. This is dangerous to humans, but is below EPA regulations. It has risen this spring and could reach deadly levels if measures are not done to prevent them. Selenium is found in volcanic soil. Water has upturned the soil and spread the selenium to water supply. Water is only as good as we take care of it. Don't let it turn into a desert. |

| Where did this problem come from? This spring, there has been large amounts of rain causing the dam to release large amounts of water. Due to a defect in the design of the dam, gas bubble disease formed. This supersaturated water was formed by the release water. The town dam was constructed in 1930 with the latest in technology in it. In the past, another fish kill was reported. The cause was never found. At the last fish kill, large amounts of water were released from the dam. The people did not know it, but it was gas bubble disease. As large amounts of water are released from the dam, it flows violently down the spillway and into the water below. This large amount of release water is forced down deep into the water | ||||||||||||||||||
