Native American Style Flutes by:  D.J.Ayres

Welcome to River Wind Flutes!
Creating "Native American Style Flutes" is our labor of love; the desire to craft with our hands and hearts, a flute that is musically excellent and easily played. An instrument for meditation, for renewal, for making a joyful noise, for inspiration and for creative expression. Music truly takes us where words cannot go. We hand make our flutes in a peaceful environment , surrounded by nature's sounds and smells and trees - always reminded that the flute's origin is the living tree, and it's purpose is to sing with the inspiration, (or breath), of the player.

~We are committed to making flutes of the highest possible quality in responsiveness, resonance, and ease of playing. Various people across North America and Canada have discovered the beautiful sound quality of our flutes, and use and play them for inspiration. We receive many gratifying letters and E-mails of appreciation from folks who have become "Love Flute" owners, saying how the flute has enhanced their lives - this is one of the most rewarding aspects of our work. Creating, working and "Playing" together is an ongoing "learning", often humbling, rewarding and challenging work of our hearts. We are blessed to be using our gifts together in this way. Our work is our love and our passion made visible.~

~To Create a
River Wind Flute  We begin by picking thru the aromatic cedar, walnut, cherry, poplar, teak, mahogany and other various types of wood, choosing only the best pieces. We then cut the wood and the various inner chambers and holes to exact specifications; a step critical to quality of sound and precision tuning. The two halves are matched, glued and clamped. Meanwhile we select wood for the animal totems or fetishes which we cut, shape and sand. These sit atop the flutes to honor each animal or figure represented, and guide the breath from one chamber to another.~

~We're then ready to shape each River Wind Flute on the lathe, drill the mouth hole and hand file and craft the flue, exit hole and the wind splitting edge or as some call it the "True Sound Hole". Then after we cut the leather strips, the hand carved Fetish or Totem is matched and attached to the flutes. Then we cut the flute to length, this determines the fundamental note of the flute. After that we heat an iron rod and hand burn each finger hole until it is tuned "just right" for that particular flute, this process also seals the holes which is much better than drilling, Next we meticulously finish sand the entire flute, to which we then apply and hand rub in many coats of oil and finish. We then carefully inspect each flute for sound quality, pitch accuracy, ease of playing, and tactile/visual beauty.~

~All  River Wind Flutes  are sanded by hand to a satin smooth surface using 100, 200, 300, 400 and 600 grit sandpapers.

~Each flute receives several coats of Mineral Oil and Bee's Wax, which is environmentally safe, and then buffed to a non-toxic satin finish.  This leaves the flute with a beautifully smooth finish as well as protecting it.~

~We hope you enjoy playing our River Wind Flutes as much as we enjoy creating them.~
