I moved from Indianapolis to the north Georgia mountains during the summer of 1997. I've moved many times before, but none were quite as eventful as this one has been. This section deals with moving.....from beginning to end, including personal experiences, advice, references and links. My hope is not only to entertain with some of my experiences, but also to assist others with issues related to moving. Hopefully your next move won't be as eventful as mine!
Let me start with 'I'm a single mother', because that will clarify some of the events to which I refer later. Allow me, also, to further clarify with the following information: I've bought/sold 2 houses in the past 15 years. I do my own taxes each year. And I'm usually an independent, organized Type-A personality. So I didn't go into this as an amateur.............or at least I didn't THINK I had!
When I accepted the job offer in Atlanta, I had 30 days to sell a house, move 5 kids and a dog, buy another house, and begin a new office. That should have been my first clue that it was going to be a less than pleasant summer! I learned very quickly to juggle........juggling all those minor details of all the above issues, knowing that any of them which were dropped would be potentially explosive. If I could sum this entire year of experiences up into one piece of advice, it would be the following:
Acquiring a House Without Committing Murder
The Art of Transferring accounts, records and information
The Physical Move....excerpts from my journal
The Financial Scene.....from mortgages to taxes
Settling In With Contracts(Insanity 101)
Finding the right attorney(Litigation 101)
Becoming a Certified Witch and Making Valid Threats 101.
These SNAFUs are not unique to my move to Georgia. They occur around the world, each and every day. Our mission in this area, is two-fold:
For those of you who have "been there, done that", we hope you find these narratives entertaining, knowing that you are not the only poor souls on earth cursed by Murphy's Law .
For those of you yet to experience such, if we prevent even ONE of these SNAFUs for you, we've accomplished our goal. And when all else fails, sing the song which fyreplug has so many times sang to me in past months: "I get knocked down, but I get up again, ain't nothing gonna keep me down"
Happy Moving!
