| Seven Days on the Klamath with the River Gods | |||||||||
| Here's to you Cindy. . . Sara Toten run, Klamath River, CA 1995 One summer we were a bit disappointed that we didn't score a permit for one of the 'Wild and Scenic" rivers that we had applied for. It was getting late in the summer so we decided on an easy going scenic float trip on the Sara Toten run of the Klamath river. We didn't anticipate much excitement on this trip. But on this particular trip, we were absolutely riveted with River God antics and non-stop comedy. Cindy was relatively new to river running. Cindy is our cute little princess friend and is always meticulous of her appearance. On day two, while she was paddling an inflatable kayak, she started bragging about how well she was able to maneuver the IK and how easy the river was to navigate. We began to distance ourselves from her as we told her that she was now taunting the River Gods and how they always take retribution. She then really played it up big and said "you guys are out of your minds, there's no such thing as the so called 'River Gods!' That evening in camp, after we all had our solar showers, changed into clean and dry clothing, enjoyed a wonderful Dutch oven cooked dinner and were sitting around the campfire, Cindy had to bring it up. She mentioned that nothing had happened to her and now that she was in camp, she was safe from our so called 'River Gods.' We shook our heads and tried to explain to her that the River Gods never forget and hopefully they'll go easy on her. Apparently, Cindy needed something from the boat and went down to the beach. All the boats were tied off side by side with the bow ends facing the shoreline in ankle deep water. Because of the brush along the shore, Cindy decided to boat-hop across four boats to get to the boat with her belongings. Wouldn't you know it - she lost her footing, slipped off a tube and fell between two boats . . . into the only spot along the beach where the river was better than four feet deep. Completely drenched, she dragged herself out and very sheepishly admitted . . ."maybe you guys were right about the River Gods." Our laughter could be heard a mile away and I'm sure the River Gods were laughing with us. Riverchucky |
