Welcome to the Home Page of Camp Guard of Elisha Dyer Camp No.7, commemorating Battery A, First Regiment, Rhode Island Light Artillery. The Elisha Dyer Camp Guard represents the Center Secion of Battery A in honor of the historical link between Capt. William Arnold, commander of Battery A during the Civil War, the traditions of the SUVCW and the historical relationship between RI SUVCW Elisha Dyer Camp 7 and RI GAR Arnold Post 4. RI SUVCW Camp 7 is the legal SUVCW successor of RI GAR Arnold Post No.4. Camp 7 was organized by RI GAR Post 4 veterans and their sons in 1909 and Post 4 was named after Capt. Arnold. The Battery A Unit Association of the R.I. Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) Civil War Museum, Library and Reseach Center, inc. has granted Camp 7 limited permission to use part of its incorporated name as "Center Section", to perform the duties of Camp Guard for R.I. SUVCW Elisha Dyer Camp No. 7 under the rules and regulations of the Order. Here you can find more information concerning ELISHA DYER Camp No.7. Since the Battery A Unit Association also supports MOLLUS, you can also click to the Rhode Island State Commandery of the MILITARY ORDER OF THE LOYAL LEGION OF THE UNITED STATES (R.I. MOLLUS), as well as more about Battery A and the R.I. GAR/Civil War Museum. |
"Uncle Abe" paid most of his soldiers $13 a month, 1861 to 1865. We're not quite so generous, but we have a lot of fun honoring America's Civil War heritage. All members of the RI SUVCW Elisha Dyer Camp No.7, Camp Guard are members of the Order. Camp 7 Camp Guardsmen are "volunteers" who assist Camp 7 in the SUVCW when uniformed men are needed. If you wish to become a member of the Elisha Dyer Camp Guard in the SUVCW go to the Camp 7 Home Page Directory or the Camp 7 Links Page Manager-Index and click the Membership link to find out how to join R.I. SUVCW Camp 7. |
All Camp Guard members are counselled on how and where to purchase the iniforms and materials needed. The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW) offer another option to all men belonging to the Order who are interested in SUVCW uniformed activities; the Sons of Veterans Reserve (SVR). For more information about the SVR click Here
The Elisha Dyer Camp 7 Camp Guard is not a part of the SVR. It is organized to serve only RI SUVCW Elisha Dyer Camp No.7 in the State of Rhode Island and complies with all National SUVCW rules and regulations. It is an honor for Camp 7 men to be a part of the Civil War Period uniformed Camp 7 Camp Guard. Members of the Camp Guard represent the highest ideals of the Order. The Camp 7 Camp Guardsmen are among the most active members of RI SUVCW Elisha Dyer Camp No.7, and hold particular reverence to RI GAR Arnold Post No.4, named after Captain William A. Arnold who commanded the Battery A, 1st Regiment Rhode Island Light Artillery unit during the Civil War. The Camp 7 Camp Guard as an entity of the SUVCW is directly under the authority of Camp 7 and the Camp 7 Commander, but respects the command structure and supports all activities and the goals of the National SUVCW and SVR. All members of Camp 7 are also encouraged to become a member of the SVR and be a part of another unit in the SVR if they desire. In fact Camp 7 Camp Guard members are not prohibited from belonging to other uniformed units. The Guard is strictly a ceremonial and educational entity of Camp 7. It is not a reenactment unit. Only men who are members of Camp 7 may belong to the elite Camp 7 Camp Guard and function as local representatives of the SUVCW. Camp 7 Guardsmen who reenact at Civil War events do that activity through the Battery A Unit Association, the 1st Infantry Unit Association, Battery F of the Newport Artillery Company or the R.I. Reenactors Association--2nd R.I. Volunteer Infantry, Co.D. These activities are outside the scope of the SUVCW and Camp 7. However, for important local Camp 7 sponsored ceremonies and educational events, Camp 7 Guardsmen are asked to give "first priority" to Camp 7 in cases of scheduling conflicts.
Although the RI SUVCW Elisha Dyer Camp No.7 Camp Guard honors Battery A, 1st Regiment Rhode Island Light Artillery, Center Section, the Camp 7 Camp Guard is not a part or entity of the RI Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) Civil War Museum, Library & Research Center organization, as is the Battery A, 1st regiment R.I. Light Artillery Unit Association. However, many individual members of the Camp 7 Camp Guard are also members of the Battery A Unit Association, apart from the SUVCW under the RI GAR Civil War Museum and they also participate in museum sponsored functions as well as other events and activities in the Reenactment-Civil War Living History community outside of the SUVCW.
