Primates are one of the most fascinating group of animals. This is not only due to great variability they show in their form, color and habits but also due to their close relationship with humans. They resemble human in their body structure, intelligence (variable) and also in behavior. The facial gesture and expression of higer primates are very similar to humans. Primates are divided into two broad Suborders based on their evolutionary and morphological characteristics. These are Prosimii, which are called primitive primates consisting of mostly rhodent like primates as lorises, pottos, lemurs etc..Anthropoidea consist of much developed monkeys and apes. The two suborders: 1. Prosimii/strepsirrhini - Primitive Primates lemurs, Indris, Sifakas, Aye Aye, Lorises, Pottos and Bushbabies 2. Anthropoidea/ Haplorrhini - further division into following families: Tarsiidae : Tarsiers Cebidae : Marmosets Aotidae : Night Monkeys(now placed in Cibidae) Pithecidae : Sakis and Ukaris Atelidae : New World Monkeys Cercopithecidae : Old World Monkeys Hylobatidae : Gibbons Homonididae : Apes and Humans New World Monkeys These monkeys inhabit South and Central America (North America lacks non human primates). These have broad nose with sidwway opening nostrils, and a prehensile tail in most of them. Capuchin, Squirrel Monkey, Tamarins, Spider Monkeys Old World Monkeys they inhabit Asia and Africa. They have narrow nose with downward facing nostrils, they lack prehensile tail Macaques, Baboons, Langurs Gibbons inhabit the Tropical Rain Forests of South East Asia. They are characterized by long arms which are longer than legs. They generally walk by swing arm motion and stay high up in canopies of trees. Apes and Humans: i think i does not need to tell about them still..... They are found in Asia and Africa. They have much developed brain, larger body size, without tail, and are high up in primate evolutionary tree Gorillas, Bonobo, Chimpanzees, Orangutan and Humans!! All primates except human are threatened by the habitat destruction and poaching by humans. Please click links for further information....... |
