| Cercopithecine Guenons include some of the most colourful monkeys. Guenon come from French word for fright. When guenons are exited they expose their teeth in a grimace. Their higly divese colour and facial pattern serve an important function of species recognition, and thus reproductive isolation between various species of guenon in same geographical area. Fruit is the main guenon food and they serve an important role of food dispersal and hence, forest regeneration. Like other Cercopithecine guenons' societies are also interwoven around core of matrilineal females, thw are patrilineal i.e. living throughout their life in their natal troop. Many guenon species often associate with other primates, such as colobus monkeys and mangabeys as well as other guenons. This is often to improve dietry intake and relaxing predation pressure. As large number dilute predation per individual and also better vigilance with increased individuals. There is great deal of disaggrement betwwen taxonomist as to how many species or subspecies of guenons are there? This is due to recent divergence of this group. As the group is visually very distinct in isolated population but other features are not that distinct to give them a species level identification. Hybrids do occur and they are also accepted in troops but may have food preferences almost different from parents. Social stucture is usuallu multimale multifemale. Unimale troops are also there in some guenons. Diet mainly consist of fruits followed by animal prey and also some flowers and leaves. Like other cercopithecines these beautiful animals are losing out to humans in their battle for existance. Forest fragmentation, deforestation, poaching etc are the main threat for the species |
