Put simply, there are 4 types of tapes - Sadako, Samara, Eun-Suh, and Unknown. There is much debate as to how these three named girls connect to each other. Some assert that they are all literally the same person. Others say that they are related. Others say they are sorts of 'reincarnations' of each other. We might never know for sure, because thanks to books and movies the line between reality and fantasy has been blurred to the point where I doubt that the memories of the girls themselves even know what was movie-script and what really happened anymore. All we know for sure is that Sadako Yamamura was our "original" spirit. There may have been others before her, but they didn't make tapes.

As for Unknown Tapes...they are rare. They are incredibly rare. What IS an Unknown Tape, exactly? It is a tape where even experts on the matter (who are few-and-far-between themselves) can not tell exactly WHO'S tape it is. There are basic defining features to the different kinds of tapes...if there are horses, it's definitely a Samara tape. If there is a volcano, it is a Sadako tape. Etc. Unknown Tapes are tapes that curse you, yes, but nobody knows who's doing the cursing. Some assert that most Unknown Tapes belong to a spirit in Chile, but we cannot know for sure, since the Unknowns are nearly impossible to find, and the only way to find out who it belongs to is to see who comes to kill you at the end of your seven days...are you brave enough? The last type of tape is the most dangerous, and it can belong to any of our 3 (4?) spirits. Super Tapes used to be very rare, but in the past year (2006) the number of copies has risen dramatically thanks to several Super Tape producers from She Is Here, one of whom is now passed. In any case, Super Tapes are made no by the spirits, but by people like you and I who have been rallied into a spirit's service. Super Tapes can cause many different outcomes...such as instant death, death at the end of 7 days no matter what, permanent comas, forced suicide, etc. For serial tape watchers like myself, Supers pose a huge threat, as they can cause such awful effects yet they appear just like any curse tape.
