There seems to be some confusion about the relationship and the differences between Witchcraft and Wicca, or a Witch and a Wiccan. So let's clear that up right now: Wicca is a religion - Witchcraft is the practice of magic, which many Wiccans chose to incorporate into their religious practices. There are plenty Wiccans who do not practice magic or call themselves a Witch, and there are plenty Witches who are not Wiccan or even religious at all. Those who chose to identify only as Wiccan are those who chose to focus on the spiritual, religious aspects and not practice magic. So indeed one can be a Wiccan and not be a witch, although many, if not most Wiccans do identify themselves as Witches as they do practice Witchcraft as well. One more thing I would like to throw in here, however. Many authors and websites these days have this strict code of what it is to be a "Witch" and what a Witch does and does not do. These lists paint all Witches as perfect beings who would never harm a fly, never curse anyone, never perform a binding, practice only what they call "white magic" and speak ill of no one. THIS IS BULL. In my opinion, they are exploiting the word "Witch" as well as "Wicca." These things they list, at least some or most of them, are true for Wiccan Witches, as causing harm goes against Wiccan law. But! Like I said, not all Witches are Wiccan. There are Christian Witches and YES, some need to learn to deal with the fact that there are Satanic Witches (and Satanism is a topic I will tackle entirely separate from this, by the way.) Anyone who believes they can and does consciously work with their own personal power and the power around them to create any sort of change has the right to call his or herself a Witch - Wiccan or not; positive or not. Whatever an individual chooses to do or call his or herself is perfectly fine for that individual, but it needs to be known that the two words, "Witchcraft" and "Wicca" are not synonymous and only sometimes is "Witch" and "Wiccan" synonymous. |
