[Dragon
Stone Index]
This list is of
dragons types from modern books, plays and poetry. The authors are
listed in brackets after the type.
Dracos
Nobilis
(from the Discworld books by Terry Pratchett)
These dragons only exist if you believe in them. Though there have been
individual occurrences of these dragons appearing, the main group of
these dragons is to be found at Wyrmberg.
It has been suggested that these dragons evolved from swamp dragons, and
retreated to the imagination when they got to the point where reality
wouldn't support them anymore.

Great Wyrms (from the Deverry series by
Katharine Kerr)
The great wyrms were once hunted by humans, but after the surviving
dragons fled, the humans forgot about them. These dragons are cold
blooded, and as such, live near a heat source, such as a underground
volcanic caves, so that they don't freeze during winter. The dragons
always move out before a volcanic eruption, probably because their
sensitive hearing allows them to hear that the volcano is close to
erupting. The name of a great wyrm holds the power to bind it to the
users will.

Gylarians (from the 'Dragon of the Valkyr'
comics by Steve Simshauser)
Gylarians are a race of space-faring dragons. The 'Dragon of the Valkyr'
comics were published by RAK Comics Group (a division of R.A.K.
Graphics, of Akron, Ohio).
Pernese Dragons (from the Pern books by Anne
McCaffrey)
These dragons have been genetically engineered from a small flying
creature that looks like a dragon. They were created to protect the
people of Pern from a threat called thread. The Pernese are a group of
colonists from earth. Dragons choose a rider just after they hatch, and
are born knowing their name. All dragon names end in 'th'. Gold and
green dragons are female. Bronze, brown and blue dragons are male. There
was a white dragon once, but he was an exception to the rule.
The dragons can
breath fire and teleport from between places and times. The place that
they go to during teleporting is called between.

Swamp Dragons (from the Discworld books by
Terry Pratchett)
Swamp dragons are small and live in swamps. When they get excited, angry
or frightened explosive gas builds up inside them, and sometimes they
explode. This is a good survival trait for the species as a whole. Any
predator that has had a swamp dragon blow up in front of it is likely to
avoid them. Sadly it is a poor survival trait for the individual swamp
dragon.

The Dragons of the Dragon Paths (from 'The
Dragon Paths' by Frena Bloomfield)
These dragons call people to them telepathically. They want company;
someone to talk to about the world. They remember a lost world that they
use to live in. They long to return there, but if they leave where they
are they will spread plague and destruction in their wake. They are only
kept at rest by a guardian - someone who can listen to their minds
without going mad. In 'The Dragon Paths' the old guardian has died, and
a new one must be found.
Quicksilver Dragons (from 'The Death Gate
Cycle' by Weis and Hickman)
Quicksilver dragons live in the High Realms of Arianus. These dragons
are unpredictable, and intelligent. They have long, slender bodies, no
wings, and silver skin. Despite the lack of wings, they fly well.

Wyrmberg Dragons (from the Discworld books
by Terry Prachett)
The dragons of Wyrmberg are created from the imagination. Wyrmberg is an
up-side-down mountain that exists in an area of high magic, which is why
dragons can pass from the imagination into existence. The further away
from Wyrmberg the dragons go, the more translucent (and less 'real')
they get.
