Computer Maintenance Tips

To achieve optimal performance, a computer system needs regular care. Here are some easy
      techniques to follow:
  • Plug the computer power cord into a power bar that is equipped with surge protection mechanism. Make sure that the power receptacle has an active earth ground connection.
  • Place the computer in a room as far as possible from main electrical appliances, furnace, air conditioner or any other equipment that generate EMI (Electro-Magnetic Interference). Ensure that it has adequate ventilation and is not exposed to high temperatures and/or humidity.
  • Use a surge protector or an  uninteruptable power supply (UPS) on your computer.
  • Computers should not share the same power line with electrical appliances or laser printers.
  • Do not manually switch the computer on and off too many times during the day (no more than once or twice). Use soft shutdown and restart.
  • Never, never, turn your computer off with the power switch until Windows has shut down.
  • Never unplug peripherals from the computer when it is powered up
  • Keep the PC protected from rough handling such as pushing, tilting or bashing.
  • Create a backup of your data on floppies, Zip disks, or CD-RWs.
  • Remove unnecessary programs and files from the hard disk.
  • Keep at least 200 MBs of your C: drive free for Windows to use.
  • Do not let a lot of programs load up when you start your computer.
  • If you have a high speed Internet connection use a firewall program.
  • Have the inside of the computer box safely, and carefully, cleaned once every  year, but more often if it's placed in a dusty environment.
  • Keep all software disks you receive with your computer and new peripherals.
  • When encountering frequent error messages, stalling and/or slow processing, reinstall or upgrade the operating system.
  • Obtain professional advice for major repairs and/or upgrades
