It seemed worth a try to develop some of the melodies out of the Heimatliches Liedgut for old-time banjo. Here's an example of how I began. On the left is an image of a song from the Liedgut, a song called "An einen Strom". The girl in the song promises her love to a false-hearted youth, and in her despair, she flings herself into a swift-running stream and drowns. Consider the similarities to a song like "Banks of the Ohio." On the right, is a page of banjo tab, my rendition of this tune in a clawhammer style. I changed the key signature from A to G in the tab, figuring the banjo could capo2 to return to the original key. |
