On February 18, my room-mate Dave had his 35 birthday, so I made him a cake. It turned out OK, but not great. I need a better recipe.

In the winter I go skiing in the fields and woods behind Mosaid. It's one of the best parts about working there. I often have the whole thing to myself. This is my path from the trail system back to work. I actually took this picture on my last day of skiing (March 13) because it warmed up the next week and melted. Now that summer's here I run the same route.

Dave and I visited Alexis for dinner. This picture's kind of dark but I like it because Dave is going on some political rant as Malcolm listens intently.

On March 31, my neice Haleigh had her 1st birthday! I wasn't there, but Kym sent me some pictures.

On April 12 I went on the trail sweep at Frontenac Provincial Park. We removed obstructions from the trails and restored missing signs. There was a huge log blocking a portage, and I was carrying a folding camp saw, so I decided to give it a try. We spent 45 minutes trying to cut through the log! Then I figured to heck with it, we'll just heave it out of the way. The guy on the left (Simon) designs gas mask filters, and the the other (Bernie) is a law professor at Queen's University.

We ate lunch by this lake at the end of the portage. You can see that it's still mostly ice-covered. But the day was nice, about 10C, clear and calm.

Here I am nailing a trail sign to the tree. You can see the knife that my father made, which always comes on adventures with me. Hmm, my pack too which I've had since Christmas 1992.

At Easter I went to Memphis, Tennessee for Richie Roger's wedding. I drove down, and took three days there and three days back. It was my first road trip since Colorado in 1998, and the first in my new car. I left in a huge blizzard, here just starting! As you probably know, this is the view from my front yard.

The first day I made it to Geneva State Park in Ashtabula, Ohio. It was a cold night, with a strong north wind blowing from Lake Erie. I don't think it dropped below freezing, but close. Fortunately I'm well equipped...I camped there and back.
This was right after the war, and I was concerned that people would be mad at me, being Canadian and all. But everyone was really nice.

The second day I drove through Ohio, and watched the thermometer on my car rise by 1 degree every half hour or so. By the time I got to Butler State Park in northern Kentucky, it was full spring. An amazing trip, driving from winter into summer in one day.

The state park is built on property that belonged to generations of heroes, generals and politicians: the Butlers. Here is their manor.

I got to Memphis on Friday night, and it was summery warm and clear. I made it right on time for the wedding rehearsal. No time to change...but nobody minded my attire. This picture shows Andy Anderson, GT, Mark Buzzelli, Richie Rogers, Jeff, Me, and Edgar Dizon. We're Richie's friends from Webster High School, and we were at The Summit; this is a restaurant in the top floor of the tallest building in Memphis.
We went to Beale Street after the wedding rehearsal dinner. It's too bad that I left my camera in the car, because I had a great time. I met a friendly chick at the bar, who introduced me to all her girlfriends. At one point she said, "You're my favourite person I met tonight." Then her friend says, "Me too!" and kisses me right on the mouth! The first girl was jealous, stamping her feet, etc...so I kissed her too. Like that song I guess: "I met a gin-soaked barroom queen in Memphis." Then my friends dragged me out to the next place, which had an awesome band, so I did some dancing. I tried to get Richie's sister Cindy to join me...and almost yanked her arm out! Reluctant!

The next day I stayed at the hotel with Richie to calm his shattered nerves. It reminded me of when he asked Christine Borkeus to the senior prom. To bolster his nerve, he borrowed my walkman to play "Hot For Teacher" by Van Halen. So I was there for him at the beginning and the end of his dating career.

On April 26 I went to Stella's 6th birthday; Stella is Alexis's daughter.

Then in early May I went to Kevin Cameron's 30th birthday; Kevin is a co-worker from my old company, GMSI.

Every summer I try something new; this year I put in a garden. 10x10, with corn, beans, peas, squash, carrots, sage, and basil. Everything is up except the corn.

On Victoria Day weekend I went camping at Bon Echo with Julie, Kevin & Gail Cameron, and their friend Brian. Here Julie is rescuing a turtle from the road. She's a field biologist, and we did a couple hikes looking for skinks, which are lizards. I also had the best astronomy session ever. The skies were perfectly clear and dark, and warm enough. I put names to many summer stars and constellations, saw M13 and M57 once again, and found M4 for the first time.

The weekend after I went to Winnipeg for my cousin Remi's wedding. Kym, Haleigh and I stayed at Uncle Luc's. Here's Haleigh with Aunty Diane. A good stay; great food, Haleigh's first bonfire, plus her first time at the beach when we visited the cottage lots at St. Laurent.

We visited the Beaudin farm, which has actually been sold after 130 years. Here's Haleigh on a tractor in front of the silos.

Me at the farm; I'll sure miss it.

Rita dancing with her father. They are Danish, so to me the night felt like Viking visitors dancing in a French village.

Ah, the bouquet being thrown and caught.

Remi and Jason Legault. Ha ha, when the garter was being thrown we showed up first. There was a 14 year old kid there too, so I say to Jason, "First we kill the kid." He says, "OK". Then we look around and it's only the two of us! I was thinking it would be an interesting scrap! But then the rest showed up. Remi threw the garter, and Jason and I both caught it! But I had a better grip, and twisted it away. After that we had a couple shots. He's a tough character but we get along. Melanie, Justin and Bruielle still have to get married, so I figure I have three more chances to beat him for the garter...less'n I get married first of course...one of these days these things will catch up to me!

Rita, her sister, and somebody else. Her sister caught the bouquet after I caught the garter.
