The above notice is an exact copy of what is posted at Richs Auto Salvage. Some may feel that the regulations brought on by government officials are unreasonable and unfair. We can't say that we are not guilty for feeling that way regarding some issues either. But the fact remains that we have a responsibility to not only obey the laws and regulations, but to do our part to preserve the well-being of our environment.
Richs Auto Salvage is one of the cleanest salvage yards in Northern Wisconsin according to Mike at ICECORE® (IC Environmental Corporation, Duluth MN). We have made great attempts and went through great lengths to keep our salvage yard neat and clean. The following are just some of the steps we take to ensure a clean environment in our area:
#1. All fluids are drained from engines, transmissions and differentials before being stored.
#2. Oils are stored in sealed containers until winter were they are then used as heating fuel.
#3. Engine coolant (antifreeze) is drained and re-sold to the public or used in our service shop.
#4. Mercury switches (hood and trunk lights) are removed from every vehicle and securely stored.
#5. All oily/greasy parts are stored inside to avoid storm water run off.
#6. Tires are removed and stored in one area for easy disposal.
#7. Unsalvageable gas tanks are removed and stored in a secure area.
#8. Grass is mowed at a regular basis to keep fire hazard and insects to a minimum.
#9. No vehicles are ever tipped on their sides or overturned to remove parts.
#10. Any vehicles found to have leaks have the leaking fluid removed.
#11. All batteries are removed and either stored in an enclosed van or re-sold to the public.
We are working with ICECORE® to implement a 10 year plan. This plan is a guideline that the Wisconsin DNR has set up to ensure that Wisconsin salvage yards are in compliance with Wisconsin DNR regulations. When our facility was inspected by ICECORE® it was found that we are already at around year eight of the plan. So it will be easy for us to prepare our yard so that it is satisfactory to the Wisconsin DNR.
