Special Mobile Force Shooting Team. A very good team it was too, taking on
All Comers from all the Ships that
visited the Island and winning every time.
Basically, it was an old Greener Gun. All the Gas shells were out of date, so we got rid of them and just kept the shell cases. Between me and a  Sugar Plantation
Owner we devised a Wooden Bullet about 6 inches long. First inch was in the shell on top of the charge, the remainder of the wood (Sawn off Broom Handles)
Was  quartered, for the remainder of its length. There was a lot of trial and error as you can probably imagine, but eventually it worked. First time it was used in earnest, the Commandant fired one at the road in front of a riotous crowd in Port Louis, it was supposed to split into four separate bits when it hit the road! But this one certainly didnt! It went up in the air and through a window into somebodys house, where it knock some poor old bloke out who was sitting in his chair reading the paper.

Short Potted History:
Brians Dad joined the Regiment in 1921 and was in Sgt Brands Squad. Unfortunately he had to be medically discharged the following year, this was due to an injury he received, whilst serving in the Royal Navy during the First World War. He had enlisted into the navy at the age of 15yrs 9mths in 1915, and served on 9 different ships over the next 5years. He then joined the Merchant Navy for 2 years. This was followed by the brief spell in the Regiment. He was then back into the merchant navy, where he stayed until getting married in 1926. His next military service was in 1939 when he was called up, (having been a member of a Territorial Army for a number of years) and ended up in France with the BEF. He started out in the Royal Engineers but was later transferred to the Military Police. He ended up as Driver to the Provost Marshall, and because of this he was one of the last, along with the Provost Marshall, to get on a boat back to the UK. He was again Medically Discharged.

Please note! The 'Cypher' is GR, this Grenade was given
to me during the early days of being a WOII, by a 'Senior
rank who had either been Commissioned, or was leaving
the Regiment. So for almost 13 years I was improperly
dressed, and nobody ever spotted it, not even the
'Hawk Eyed Sgt Majors'.
