John is a friend of Brian Brenchley, they served in the 2nd Battalion in BAOR at Sennelager and Krefeld in the late 40's early 50's. They both came from Doncaster and on occasions were home on leave at the same time, so saw quite a bit of each other. One little story Brian recalls - they were both Sgt's in Waiting for their respective company's. Brian spotted a letter in the orderly room, about a vacancy for L/Sgts ERE in Rhodesia, he told John about it and they both put their name down for this post. To cut a long story short, John got the job and off he went. They kept in touch on and off over the years but lost touch in mid 80's and it was only when Brian managed to get hold of a 'Nominal Roll' showing those Ex Grenadiers living in Australia and New Zealand that he managed to establish contact again at Christmas 2004. They now exchange letters photographs etc every few months. Contact is by 'Snail Mail' as John is not on the 'Net'.

"This morning, Saturday 2nd December 2006, I received the sad news that my old friend John had passed away in the early hours. John was in the 3rd Bn in Malaya in the late 40's and then in the 2nd Bn in BAOR in the early 50's. Since managing to find John again in December 2004 we have been exchanging letters, photographs and phone calls etc., every few months. Contact had to be by 'Snail Mail' as John was not on the 'Net'. But anything of importance which required a quick answer, I was able to send via his daughter Margaret at her place of work, and this worked extremely well.

He had  some trouble with his sight failing last year, and in fact had to have an eye removed because of cancer. He was getting over this quite well, but then things started happening with his other eye and towards the end of November he was taken into hospital. I did manage to have a chat with him about two weeks ago, but I am afraid the writing was already on the wall. The only consolation, if it can be called that, was that he didn't suffer to greatly. I will certainly miss my Old Pal. R.I.P."
