Sowing the Seeds
Agriculture continues to be Burkina Faso's major economic activity. More than 90% of Burkina's 12 million inhabitants and over 70% of the working population survive on or are involved in farming. Unlike other West African countries, Burkina Faso's farm land is mainly devoted to growing food crops as the country is trying to rapidly become completely self-sufficient in foodstuff. Cereals are therefore grown on most of the country's farm lands: sorghum in the wetter regions, and millet in the drier regions with sandy soil. With yeilds of over 2 million metric tons a year, these two African cereals alone account for 73% of Burkina Faso's cultivated lands.
