My friend, Ouédraogo Abdoulaye

In Burkina Faso, where 70% of the population still practice animism, the main revealed religions of the world, like Islam and Christianity, have not had a major impact. Islam - which is predominant throughout North Africa from Morocco to Egypt, and is the main religion in all the Sahelian countries from Senegal to Somalia, including Mali, Niger and Chad - seems to have avoided most of Burkina Faso. This anomaly can be explained by the country's history: for centuries, Burkina Faso was ruled by powerful Mossi who resisted the Muslim invaders. (here, however, my friend is dressed to the nines to celebrate the end of Ramadan, the muslim month-long fast to usher in the new year)
