There is a lot of information about tarot cards out there. It leaves the beginner with the question of where to start?
The first thing you need to do is get your own deck of tarot cards. There are a lot of decks out there, so pick one that you feel comfortable with. I choose the Rider Waite deck based on a suggestion from a friend. The cards seem very easy to read based on the symbology of both the major and minor arcana. Most places that sell cards will have a sample pack you can look at. If you shop on the internet, you can usually see a few pictures of the cards in the deck. Pick a deck that calls out to you and you can relate with.
The next thing you need to do is study your cards. With 78 cards in the deck that’s a lot to ask of anyone. If you take reversals into account that’s 156 meanings to memorize.
Your best bet is to pick one card out of the deck each day to meditate on. Spread the cards out on a flat surface and pick a daily card at random. Briefly study the cards meaning. Now as you go through your day meditate on that card. Look for happenings in your day that relate to that particular card. It won't happen overnight but before you know it you will have a very good understanding of the cards in your deck.
As you start to get a general understanding of your cards, learn a couple of tarot spreads. Each day ask the cards a question and lay out a spread that you feel comfortable with. I started out with the Celtic cross and found it to be to confusing for a beginner. So I focused on a horseshoe spread that I found online. After I got better reading the cards I focused on more complicated spreads. I have about 5 different spreads that I focus on and find the Celtic cross very easy to read now.
It’s incredible how insightful the cards can be. The more comfortable you get with their individual meanings the more accurate your readings will become. It really is amazing.
My biggest suggestion to anyone wanting to learn tarot is to read everything you can possibly find on the subject. There has been a ton of books written on the subject and there is a lot of info on the internet. You will find a lot of different perspectives on the subject. When I read anything on this subject I try to find one or two insightful tidbits that I can incorporate into my reading style. As you read more and more info on the subject you will find a style of reading that works for you.
