For some obscure reason, flocks of Canadian geese apparently decide to winter here, many of them at the lake down the street from where I live. I presume they are thrown off balance by the Colorado Springs winters, during which a string of mild and sunny days will be occasionally interrupted by a dire blizzard or subzero temperatures. In any event, I have often thought of heading down to the lake and waiting around for a flock to take flight, since I often see formations of them on the wing. This morning, as I was about to get into my car, I heard the unmistakable sound of a gaggle of geese coming from the direction of generally overhead. As fortune had it my camera was in my pocket, and I managed to whip it out and grab a quick shot of two geese flying directly overhead, one side of a lopsided V formation whose compatriots were flying on the other side of me.
Okay. So, Caleb Deschanel I'm not, at least not until I upgrade from this camera I've been using. But I may yet grab some decent shots of these guys. There are few sights as simultaneously jarring and compelling as a squadron of geese headed straight on for your car, the leader resembling nothing so much as the fuselage and wings of World War Two fighter.
