TERRA INCOGNITA

Terra Incognita

Q&A

"Why the hell have you reviewed this??".
Good question. Well, a lot of people remember it. And as you play the role of an interactable character, it's technically an RPG. And who else reviewed it? This may well be the only English-spoken review of this game (Unless the Japanese reviewers translated one of their reviews, but then that could hardly be called 'English', Terra Incognita)

Story

To tell you the truth, God knows. All I know (and this is from the (terribly translated) intro) is that these two dodgy blokes have recovered stuff from ruins before. They reckon that they can get this piece of junk called the Golden Pedestal. But the problem is, "They say the treasure is protected by horrable monster..." (this is said by your mate exactly as I have typed it). Can you get it?

Looks OK, doesn't it...

Game

I have finished this game both of the possible ways. I will not give much away, but you start as a strange little bloke who's head isn't touching his body. You go around the 3D world killing blobs, opening doors with keys, throwing bombs to destroy special blocks, throwing blocks, standing on them, pushing big metal blocks and doing other things like that. The world is quite nice, even inside the caves. Later in the game, you will reach a dragon thing (Your mate mentions this in the intro). If you dodge his tail and flames, and jump just after he does, while hitting his stomach, he shouldn't last very long. Then you can get the Golden Pedestal! But don't get excited yet - you've still go to get it out. If you succeed, well done! I hope you can swim! If you don't succeed, at least you'll get to hit your mate! (not a real mate - the guy in the intro)

Gameplay

The game isn't very big, and I can finish it in less than 15 minutes. The controls are easy to
learn - Square = Use sword / pick up / read sign X = Jump O = Use power recovery. Puzzles are easy to medium difficulty. Once you've mastered the choice of camera angles, you can get into this. But if you have finished it, coming back is quite unlikely. If you have read the Game section, you should know what you can do. Also, if you get injured, you stop your swing and can't attack again until you have recovered. This gives the enemy another hit, which is very annoying. The good points all help, but it's only worth 6/10.

Graphics

This game has mastered quite impressive effects for it's time such as lens-flare. The place is nicely made and the background goes reddish later in the game. I decided it was worth 7/10.

Sound

Two pieces of music and not much SFX make it bad in quantity, but the music inside the cave is quite good. I suppose there is no point in giving it more than half though - 5/10.

Originality

I don't recall seeing any RPG's like this before it's release - only 3D platformers. Well, I'll have to give it the big 10/10 then, but I don't want to.

Price

This game is counted as a demonstration of the Yaroze (All Yarozes have been sold - Unfortunately you probably wont ever get one now). I think that this makes the game free with it's magazine. (First released with the Official PlayStation Magazine volume 2, issue 14)

This gets 6/10!

This was last updated 6/9/00. I probably wont update it again.
