FF2 (and FF4) is mainly about
a bloke called Cecil. I am not going to say much so you can enjoy the story
yourself. But what I am going to tell you is that Cecil's job is with the
"Red Wings" stealing crystals for the King of Baron, his home town. The
game tells the story quite quickly, which is unusual for a Final Fantasy.
Cecil soon makes the king think that he is rebellious, so he is told that
he is dismissed from the "Red Wings" and is told to take a package to Mist
Village. Your best friend Kain goes with you. When you get there, the package
blows open to set the village on fire. Rydia, who was separated from her
mother causes an earthquake, separating you and Kain. You protect her,
and she joins you. You soon find your girlfriend who is ill, and needs
the "SandRuby" from the Antlion. This leads to you finding a Sage called
Tellah who is looking for his daughter Anna. You join him and go off for
a battle with Octomamm. More is revealed later in the game, which you'll
have to find out for yourself.
Game
This seems to be very big.
I have mentioned enough about this game in this review already, so I will
just mention the fact that FF2 and FF4 are exactly the same, as a friend
of mine found out when he got FF4 dead cheap from an import shop, second
hand. Unless you decide that you would like FF4 just to finish the collection
for the hell of it, or to learn Japanese, don't bother trying.
Gameplay
This is a quite big game from
what I have played. The controls seem to be kind of difficult for people
who haven't played a Final Fantasy game before, but you'll eventually get
used to it if you are. Also, there is not as much freedom of movement as
other games. Puzzles aren't too hard but some enemies are ridiculously
hard. Also, the random battles can become very annoying. You can easily
get into this game, but if you get to an enemy that is ridiculously hard,
you may not come back for a while. I give it 7/10.
Graphics
This is all 2D, but the work that has been put in to the detail is amazing. For these graphics, I give it 8/10!
Sound
There could have been more SFX in fight scenes - nearly all of the different main attacks and magic attacks sound the same as each other. Luckily, the music is strange at points but creates a mysterious atmosphere. Also the music is catchy and great which makes the score 8/10.
Originality
Square's Final Fantasies take a different approach towards RPG's. Fight scenes can get annoying when you can't see who you are about to fight in the over-world, but it is a great idea. But I suppose that FF2 (and FF4) deserves about 8/10.
Price
I have no idea what FF2's and FF4's normal price is, but I will add it if someone e-mails it to me. You may find it dead cheap somewhere, and it may be worth getting. In fact, I'm not even sure where they were originally released.
This gets 8/10!
This was last updated 2/8/1999. I'll try to update it often.
