BARSTOW - He considers it a GIFT from God and spends his days using that gift. LOCAL Artist RICHARD FERNANDEZ FUERTES had its first show in his hometown of San Narciso Zambales, Philippines and titled the show "GOD'S GIFT". "GOD GIVEN ME THIS TALENT", Fuertes said.

A member of the Barstow Art Guild, Fuertes paint large pictures using mostly acrylics although he also uses a few oil pastels and some watercolors. He has set up a small outdoor studio behind his home with a simple enclosed area and a make-shift roof to keep the sun at bay. His paintings line the sides and a little alcove holds his collection of MUSIC - from classical to Christian to contemporary.

He always listens to music as he works, he said. It wasn't always that nice, he said. When he began, he worked under an umbrella until he could gather the materials to construct his studio. Along with material problems he had his internal troubles and he said that - like many artists - he suffers from bouts of depression.

The art is the way to express his deepest feelings. "Express your anger, your hatred....your emotion totally," he said. Fuertes speaks of anger and hatred, but his paintings are mostly florals. Large colorful flowers spill from vases in many of his works. He has "Flowers of Patience" and "Flowers of Courage" among his titles.

I Believe that." Every good and perfect gift is from ABOVE coming down from the Father of heavenly lights who does not change like shifting shadows."

I Believe that." I ALONE know the plans I have for YOU plans to bring you prosperity and not disaster to bring about the future you HOPE FOR"

I believe to be an ARTIST you should be thankful to the lord for all the gifts and talents that he entrusted to be use for his glory.

Inspite of my STRUGGLES, TRIALS and HARDSHIPS and the mocking that I have been through. To be true to yourself. Artist should have talent, patience, strong determination. motivation with love, faith and hope and special relationship with the LORD.
