More of Jake's Diary

Day (It's Monday, what day is that?)
11:34am (PST)

This weekend turned out to be all right.  Challenging, for sure, but all right.  The barbecue on Saturday was fabulous, lot's of great people.  They let me grill, which was very kind.  It gave me something to do besides think about eating non-rice.  Normally I use barbecues as an excuse to overconsume everything.  It was nice to leave hungry, not stuffed. And Tri, I really appreciate all your offers to make me an ice cream sandwich or grab me a burger.  I know you weren't being at all facetious.

Yesterday was the Mariner's game, the highlight being the disappointed look on the faces of all the drunk Red Sox fans.  Take that!  Back into your doldrums.  My friends Kait and Pimps were kind enough to make me a thing of brown rice while they consumed mimosas and french toast.

I actually had a dream last night about a chicken pot pie.  I'd eaten half of it, realized what I was doing, and then snuck into a corner to finish so that no one could see me.  I think this is the first time I've ever dreamed about a pot pie.  It tasted really good in the dream.  I think this is why I am feeling satisfied at work today.  I'll have to rely on my dreams to feed me.

Hmm, rice cakes.  I'll have to give those a whirl.  I cooked some arborio rice yesterday, and it was AMAZING.  I never would have discovered the subleties of different rice varieties without this challenge.  For that, I am grateful.  Arborio is the rice used to make risotto.  It is a little more delicate and sticky.

At the barbecue, my friend Tri (mentioned above) told me about sweet rice.  Apparently, it is just rice that is sweet.  Go figure.  But, get this.  He thinks it might be naturally sweet.  Tonight I shall seek out some sweet rice.  Wish me luck!

Day 6 (almost 7)
Tuesday, May 16  10:51am
Further dreams of pot pie: 0
Pining for pot pie dreams: Incessant
Misery of miseries...  So, yesterday, after I posted, I went down to grab a snack from the fridge at work.  Lo and behold, housekeeping had thrown away my lunch over the weekend.  C'mon now!  It was properly labeled and post-dated.  I had my name and 5/16/2005 on it.  Plus, it was freakin' rice!  Rice doesn't stink up the fridge.  And, that bag had a 3/4 jar of really good peanut butter in it.  Now, before I get accused of consuming a contraband substance, I just keep it in the fridge so I can have peanut butter and celery in the afternoons when it is not Rice Week 2005.

Quick sidenote:  One of the guys in my office is making sounds like Chewbacca.  Hilarious.

So, there I was in our coffee room, fully without anything to consume.  What was I to do?  Luckily, I was headed to training.  I stopped by a Magic Dragon (more like Tragic Dragon) and bought a bowl of rice for $1.09.  I think I've eaten on less money than that for this entire week.

Speaking of economical, that is another way we could pimp this diet.  Lose weight and save a ton of money!  I am going to weigh myself again tonight and will let you know the results.

About weight, I went and had my measurements taken for a tuxedo for my brother's wedding.  They were just wrapping up, and the guy asked me my height and weight.  When I told him I weighed 220lbs, he said, and I quote, "No way, really?"  "Yes, really", I replied.  I don't know whether to be insulted or flattered.  Maybe this rice is turning me into a woman.  (Umm, just kidding.  That probably wasn't an appropriate remark).

Also, I stopped by the grocery store and bought rice cakes and rice noodles.  The rice cakes are excellent.  Thanks for the recommendation, Eric.  The rice noodles are just like rice, without all the yummy flavor.  Blech.

Last night was non-descript, just like the rice I consumed.

This morning, I had a seminar in downtown Seattle.  I got off the bus, and Neil Diamond's "Forever in Blue Jeans" started playing on my IPOD.  Great song, but I felt really lame.

About the seminar- it was at a really nice hotel.  They had an amazing, repeat, amazing buffet.  Aaaaaaargh!  But, how many times in your life do you get to eat just rice for a week?  (Once, count it, once.)  I'll be able to sample a buffet at some other point.
