| Jake's Diary... (I got some feedback that my red color wasn't so hot after all.) My Story: So, yesterday (Tuesday, May 10) I get this email from Eric explaining Rice Week 2005. At first, I was a little offended. Apparently, word of my eating prowess had not yet reached Michigan. I mean, I emerged victorious from Slurpee Summer 2001 and my picture is on the wall at Big Judd's twice. Two times I have consumed their delicious burgers with a pound of cooked meat! I just felt that I should have been included. I emailed Eric to explain my irritation, and he invited me to join. And so here I am, eating rice for an entire week. Day 1 May 11, 1:30pm Rice Consumed: 0 bowls My rice week started after I downed the last bite of chicken and grapes for lunch. My last not-rice for an entire week. I wish I had eaten slower. However, I'm not real nervous about this yet. I've got a gigantic bag of Calrose rice, left over from college days. I hope that rice keeps for two years. Turns out I didn't think this through fully. I just realized that I've got a barbecue on Saturday and a Mariner's game on Sunday, complete with a mimosa brunch. I guess I'll take my own little tupperware of the white stuff. May 11, 7pm Rice Consumed: 1.5 bowls Wow, I've been on the South Beach diet, and have not had white rice in quite some time. I found it quite refreshing and a little indulgent. I'm really going to be putting our rice-cooker to the test. It's a Salton(R), and I think that's pretty good. I've also wondered about rice cakes, but am not sure if those are allowed. I am planning on experimenting with arborio and brown rice. Any other suggestions? My wife asked my why I was doing this, and I thought the answer might be appropriate for everyone to hear. I am doing it primarily because I am a sucker for an eating challenge (Just dare me to eat that grande burrito again, Marc. I'll do it.), and it is for a good cause (see below). Also, it is a good opportunity for me to reconnect with Eric (aww...). Men bond through eating and competition. I shouldn't have to explain that. My charity- I am planning on donating the proceeds to Children's Hospital Uncompensated Care Fund. I work at Children's, and the Uncompensated Care Fund is to help families that cannot afford to pay for their child's care. Children's will not turn anyone away based on their ability to pay. I personally think it is quite neat. Check out their website... Day 2 May 12, 7:30am Rice Consumed: 3 bowls I don't know if I've ever had rice for breakfast. Not my normal coffee and eggs, but it will suffice. That is, rice will suffice. Eric warned me about not staying in grocery stores too long. I don't think Eric (or myself) realized how much rice I have. It is a huge bag. I think I have about 8 pounds of it. If this rice-eating catches on, I may never have to go to the store again. I am loving the simplicity of rice. I never have to plan a meal. "Hmm, what am I going to have for lunch? Ah yes, I know. Rice." Nutrition has never been easier. Also, I've notice that sometimes the ad frame on the right has advertisements for rice. Even funnier, I saw one for the South Beach Diet. PAGE 2 HOME |
