Day 3
May 13, 7:54pm
Rice Consumed: 5 bowls
Failed Attempts To Use Only Rice And Water In A Recipe: 1

So I found a recipe online for rice milk...1 cup cooked rice, 4 cups warm water, and 1 tsp of vanilla. Blend, chill, and serve. Vanilla, of course, is off limits (not that I have any in the house anyway) so I tried just blending rice and warm water. One word, two syllables: not good at all. That vanilla must be very crucial.

I'm with Alex on the contraband issue...not until I develop beriberi (which is what most websites about eating lots of rice warn against). Today I broke out the brown rice. Chewier, and supposedly much more nutritious. But it's still rice...and as Alex put it so well "It's so f*&%ing boring."

Day 4
May 14, 12:25pm
Rice Consumed: 5.5 bowls
Cooking Shows I Couldn't Help But Watch: 1

Oh, America's Test Kitchen...cooking up some delicious dishes as always. And in case anyone is looking for the best sun-dried tomatoes, head to Trader Joe's. And if you're looking for rice, STOP and go get something with actual flavor instead.

Well, we've breached the 72 hour mark, and have entered the middle 48 hours of this challenge, which are more aptly called "The Dark Ages." The novelty has worn off, but the finish line is not yet in sight. But I prefer to continue running!

Donut Week would be intense, and also cavity prone. Jenny suggested last night the possibility of a dual food-beverage challenge, like Graham Cracker and Milk Week. Sound off on the Guestbook...what challenges would people like to see in the future?

Day 5
May 15, 1:46pm
Rice Consumed: 6 bowls + 10 rice cakes
Joy At Crossing the Halfway Point: Boundless

So store-bought Rice Milk was a bust...it all contains various contraband (also read "delicious") ingredients like processed extracted safflower oil and sea salt. BUT, plain rice cakes have been a resounding success. I found some lovely organic brown rice cakes that contain ONLY rice, and they're really helping out. How sad is that? I wake up in the morning excited...genuinely excited...to eat plain rice cakes.

Still no word from PayPal regarding how to fix the donation link...today I will investigate other online donation options.

Alex's suggestion of baked beans & champagne week is pure genius...talk about a hilarious challenge. Other possibilities...cheddar cheese & Pabst Blue Ribbon...pretzels & apple cider...bacon & chocolate milk.

Day 5 (nearly 6)
May 16, 11:01am (hour 119 of 168)
Rice Consumed: 6 bowls + 20 rice cakes
Taste Buds: Dormant

I've gone completely away from boiled rice, opting for rice cakes only in the last days of the Rice Week 2005 Charity Challenge. But their novelty is wearing thin. I'm moving towards the Jake plan..."Sleep it off." As I was about to go to bed yesterday around midnight, I realized that it was entirely possible for me to sleep through at least half of the 60 remaining hours.

I'm happy for Rice Week to end, but sad that I won't be able to share in the jubilation with my rice brothers. I was telling Alex that we should have planned for a reunion trip at the end of the week. Perhaps after Baked Beans & Champagne week we can arrange such a gathering.

Oddly, I've been a much more early riser than normal during Rice Week. It's probably the beri-beri. I'm not sure whether I need a general pratitioner or a psychiatrist. Or both. Color me Dave Chappelle.
