Last year, three of us went to Ohio and we were trying to find interesting spots to stop and watch trains. We came
across a few interesting websites that gave us some info but that type of info was lacking for here in NS so we
decided to do these pages. I hope that you will find them useful. For more information
you can join the AtlanticRails yahoogroup.
You will find useful information and tips on the area as well as heads up on foriegn roadpower or
trains that are running late or early. The focus is on Atlantic Canada (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and PEI)
.
There is one Class 1 operating in NS and two (???) shortlines. These are the basic directions of travel referencing highway maps and more information can be found following the links below including trains times, mileages, scanner frequecies and good vantage points.
Canadian National (CN) runs from the border at Amherst, NS through Truro then to Halifax. It sort of follows the TransCanada Highway 104 from Amherst to Truro and then highway 102 to Halifax.
Cape Breton and Central Nova Scotia (CBNS) interchanges with CN in Truro and goes east to Sydney. It follows the 104 east from Truro crosses the Canso Causeway to Port Hawkesbury, the 105 towards Whycocomagh and then the 223 towards Sydney.
Windsor & Hantsport Railway Company (WHRC) interchanges with CN north of Halifax (timetable west) in Windsor Junction and runs west to New Minas following Highway 101 through Windsor
