This site is dedicated to my uncle, Russell Ewins, a World War II Spitfire pilot with 453 Squadron RAAF, who like many men of his generation served their country in its hour of need.
Russ was born in Ballarat, Victoria on 18 March 1917 and trained as a mining engineer at the Ballarat School of Mines. He was working at Mt Isa when he enlisted in the air force in 1941, trained as a pilot in Canada under the Empire Air Training Scheme and was posted to 453 Squadron RAAF when it was re-formed at Drem, Scotland in 1942.
