Magneto
How did he die?: Magneto was arch enemy to the X-Men for years. He's actually died and come back a number of times, but the only one where I know the details is the most recent one. As soon as I have the others, I'll update this bit. But his most recent death came when, during another battle with the X-Men, Wolverine stabbed him with his claws. How he came back: He hasn't yet, but in the marvel universe, I think only Wonder Man has died more times than Magneto, so he probably won't stay dead too much longer.
Phoenix
How did she die?: When the X-Men were returning from a mission in outer space, their space shuttle began to fall apart. With the other X-Men strapped in the back, Jean Grey sat alone in the cockpit and attempted to hold the shuttle together with her telekinetic powers, knowing the effort would probably kill her. The shuttle crashed into the East River, and Jean suddenly burst from the water, wielding the power of the Phoenix, an entity of incredible cosmic power. And then went evil. The Dark Phoenix destroyed and entire star system, before being subdued by the X-Men. But when the Shi'ar came to execute Phoenix, the X-Men tried to defend her. A battle commenced on the moon, between the X-Men
and the Shi'ar imperial guard, during which Cyclops was critically wounded. Seeing her lover struck down, Phoenix nearly became Dark Phoenix again. But when Cyclops shouted to her, she realised he wasn't dead, and also realised she wouldn't be able to control the Phoenix power for long. She sacrificed her own life to prevent the Dark Phoenix from rising again. How she came back: The Avengers found a strange cocoon on the bottom of the East river. Inside: the comatose body of Jean Grey. It turns out that the Phoenix didn't actually take over Jean's body, just used it as a template to create a new one. Which has got to be one of the worst resurrection excuses ever.
Sin-Eater
How did he die?: A former cop, the Sin-Eater had his own idea's of justice and terrorised New York for weeks, battling both Spider-Man and Daredevil. He was eventually killed in a gunfight with the NYPD. How he came back: Another one of the few to stay dead, although let's face it, he was never going to come back was he? Who's actually heard of him before?
Wolverine
How did he die?: On a mission with a group of X-Men to save the Mannites from Death, the horseman of Apocalypse, Wolverine battled Death in a vicious confrontation that ended when Death stabbed Wolverine with his sword. Normally, Wolverine's healing factor would've been able to cope with this, but for some reason, it couldn't and Wolverine died. (See "The Astonishing X-Men" volume 2, #3, published by Marvel comics) How he came back: But it was ok, because it turned out that this wasn't the real Wolverine, but a skrull (a shapeshifting alien race) imposter, which explained why his healing factor didn't save him: he didn't have one. But where was the real Wolverine? It turned out, in an interesting twist, that
Wolverine had been captured by Apocalypse and transformed into Death. So if you think about it, Wolvie killed himself.
