| Monday, 10/18/2004 It's official, I'm moved into my very first, new apartment!!! Yeah, I took pictures but I haven't had a chance to get them posted yet... probably because I'm still working on getting everything set up, including my cable and internet connection. But hey, I have heat, water, and electricity so I'm good for now. I was supposed to drive to MD on Friday night to help load up the last of my things onto the moving truck and take care of any last minute occurances. Then Saturday morning I was going to drive my car back to NY and Mom was going to follow me in the moving truck. But when I called the house around 4:30pm to see how things were going, Mom told me that the truck was completely loaded and ready to go. So I half joking/half serious asked if she wanted to drive to NY that night. Well, I emailed her the directions and my friend James was going to drive with her, but at the last minute he was called about an interview so he couldn't go. Mom ended up driving all the way to New York by herself, just following directions, and arrived at my apt. around 1:30am on Saturday morning. We slept in sleeping bags on the floor. ;) I was able to meet my new neighbors though. They're young (between 24 & 27) and very nice. And the cool part was, they took the initiative to introduce themselves to me, and said I was welcome to stop by anytime. I think I'll make/bake/give something cutsie to initiate warm-fuzzies and such. Well, Mom and I woke up early Saturday morning, got coffee and breakfast from dunkin' donuts, and then pulled up the moving truck to my apt. door and started unloading the boxes. We managed to get all the boxes unloaded before Joe, Anthony, and Tom showed up to help unload the heavy furniture. We finished getting everything into the apt. by 1pm on Saturday. Then Joe took Tom and Anthony back to Marist while Mom and I got some lunch. Joe came back and the 3 of us started assembling my computer desk, and the glass and chrome shelving unit set. We also started sorting boxes between clothes, kitchen, computer, books, and misc. We got a lot done, and were able to arrange the major pieces of furniture where I wanted them, with all the boxes sort of piled around the furniture. Joe had lots to do so he went back to Marist, but Mom and I returned the moving truck, got some dinner, and then went shopping. I still can't find curtains that I want that will fit in my non-typical dimensioned windows, so we found some things that will work for window coverings until Mom can make me curtains. I would make my own curtains, but she has the sewing machine (and as Joe most poignantly noted, she also has the new sewing room that used to be my bedroom). We went to Home Depot, Linens and Things, Stop and Shop, and Target. We got back to the apartment about 9:30 and after working some more, we finally collapsed on the couches and passed out while watching My Big Fat Greek Wedding. On Sunday we were actually able to have breakfast at my place (for anyone who has moved into a new place, the ability to make a meal is a big deal). I showed her the campus, building, and office where I work, showed her the village of New Paltz, and after running some errands we grabbed a light lunch and went to the train station. That was fun trying to help my mom get on the right train, pray she could figure out where she needed to go when she got to Penn Station, and hope that she got back to MD safe and sound. BTW, she's very smart, she's just never rode a train in the US before, so it's easy to get confused. It was wierd driving back to my apt. alone, and it finally hit me that I'm really here, 5 hours away from everything familiar, and it's still a little overwhelming. But I know I'll be ok. And I'm really excited about all the incredible opportunites that are available for me here in NY. Now, I'm completely exhausted and I really really want to collapse on my comfy bed and just relax. The unpacking and decoration can resume tomorrow. ;) Ciao! |

| Wednesday, 10/13/2004 Ok all, here's the rest of the story! This "man of my dreams" was a guy who sat 2 seats in front of me in my Christian history class, first semester my sophomore year in college. Anyways, I was introduced to him by his friend (who sat directly in front of me and whom I also ran into at a Brandtson show in Baltimore) but I shortly found out that he was married! What the heck? Married @ 20 years old? So anyways, it became this joke that "all the good guys are taken, just look at Rhea's 'man of her dreams'... there's no hope when great guys are getting married at 20." Yeah, it was just a crazy coincidence that this guy was on While You Were Out, but I didn't recognize him until the very end, because his hair was really different. Anyways, that's my story and I'm sticking to it. I had my first official day of "nothing to do" at work. Or should I say morning, because there's always stuff to do in the afternoons... because that's when the students start showing up. ;) What was it Bill said yesterday, "This place would run great if it weren't for the students."? Hehehe, perhaps... but then where's the excitement? the challenge? I have tons of forms stacked in my office that need to be either thrown out or revised, but until Bill or Elkyn can go through these forms and decide what they do and don't want to keep, I can't do anything with them. And that's not going to happen until at least Thursday, so I'm sitting on them (yes, literally) until then. Then there's the revamping of the filing system... however I have no hanging files and am waiting for them to arrive (the PO is still being processed by the finance dept. of SA). Oh yes, and then there's the entire bookshelf of old, outdated books that need to be thrown out... but of course there's paperwork and an official process to do that too. So I'm waiting for that, or Bill and I are just going to be sneaky and get rid of them anyway without going through official channels. But!!... This very short break was certainly only a mild hiccup and things will keep roaring on as usual. Oh I'm such a girly-girl... I was at work and Karina (head of Res Life) brought me a slice of chocolate chip pound cake. And it seriously sat on my desk for 5 hours and I wanted to eat it so badly but it was really messy and I didn't have a fork and I didn't want to get chocolate all over my fingers... so I was waiting for a fork to spontaneously appear in my office so I could eat this thing. I finally broke down and asked Bill for a plastic fork, which he had 5 of because he and Elkyn steal them from the campus food court. I should have just asked... now I'll be a klepto. Yesterday afternoon developed into an interesting situation in that our TV sports director and assistant sports director had it out for each other because of a mistake that had been made and then blown all out of proportion. What started off as the ASD coming to me about the issue turned into Bill and I locking ourselves in the TV main office with the SD and ASD until the situation got worked out. LOL, suddenly I feel like I'm subbing for high school again. But yeah, it happens, it gets dealt with, we move on, news gets filmed. Anyways, as much as it might sound like I'm complaining, I'm really not. I love doing what I'm doing and it's just so great to be excited about getting up in the morning and going to work. Plus it's fantastic to not count hours, not be silently pleading that the work day would be over, and not get upset when I realize that I have to stay later to get some work done. I come, I work hard, I love it, and I leave when I'm ready. Good times! Well, until next time... Ciao! |
