| Chailyn laughed. Danny and Joseph were pretty funny once you got used to the weird way they talked. "Come on," Danny called. He was the cool one. He had sandy blond hair and big brown eyes. He always thought of the jokes. At first she'd been sort of scared of them, because she hadn't really understood what was going on. But she did now, and it was all good. It was all for the best. Chay smiled. "I'm coming," she called happily, following them deeper into the forest, "Don't worry." "We never do," said Joseph. Chailyn laughed again. She could tell that was true. They didn't seem to care about trouble. Somewhere deep inside herself, Chailyn could hear someone she used to know warn her against people like that. But who cared? Joseph and Danny were cool. "Look at this!" Joseph called. He was standing over a hole in the ground, his dark hair falling in his face. Danny caught up to him and peered in, "Whoa!" He grinned, "Awesome." Chailyn trotted to catch up. "What is it?" She said, ready to be fascinated. They didn't answer. Chailyn crept up and peeked over the edge. She jumped back in horror. It was a raccoon. It was dead. It's foot had been clamped down in a hunter's trap, but something else had killed it. Something much bigger and hungrier than the raccoon. Chailyn felt sick to her stomach. She looked up at Danny, he was still grinning, looking at Joseph. "Do you think it was Raymond?" His eyes were glowing. "Oh yea," Joseph answered, a weird half smile distorting his face. "Come on, I think we can still get there before sunset." |
