| How the Wind She Blows Chapter 3 |
||||||||||||
| Melody Honeycut slowly massaged her temples with her fingertips. She had just gotten off the phone with Don Calder. Her best friend for as far long as she could remember was having serious issues. And Melody had no idea what to do about it. She'd thought for a very short time that she might be able to help find the culprit who had beaten Kate's daughters-- Melody's goddaughters. But she'd been wrong. Officially, at least as far as Kate was concerned, she'd handed the case over to Calder and Fox because she couldn't handle looking at the photos of the girls and seeing them in their current comatose states. It was partially true. Melody hated seeing Mara and Chailyn that way, but she'd seen some pretty disturbing things in her life. Not that she'd seen worse, per say, but she'd seen pretty bad. The unofficial reason she'd handed the case over, was because she wanted whoever had committed such a horrible crime behind bars for life and after having spent only two days on the case, she knew she couldn't put him there. It was. . . nearly impossible, if not entirely so. In fact, the only person that Melody even had the possibility to suspect was Kate herself. She didn't tell Kate this of course, but she knew it would come down to that eventually. Kate had the only motive: she admitted they'd all been fighting. Kate had the only opportunity: she admitted not having heard any noise until Mara's scream, and on top of that there was no forced entry. Then there was also Kate's history with her husband. That was bound to surface soon. Melody wanted to scream. She knew the police had to be nearing the same conclusions. But she also knew Kate Richard better than anyone alive, and she knew, positively knew, that Kate wouldn't have harmed a hair on either child's head. She just prayed to God that Don Calder would be able to solve this. If anyone she knew could, it was Don. He was a fantastic investigator. But this was one hell of a tough case. She closed her eyes and remembered her parting words to Don on the phone. Please Don, she'd said, solve this one. Solve this one and I'll be in debt to you forever. Don't hesitate if there's anything you need to ask me. She'd meant it, and she knew that he would ask soon. There were strange things in Kate Richard's life that were often hard to understand. Melody stood up. There was no time to worry about the past. Right now she had a friend in need of a friend, and she intended to do something about it. Besides, she'd told Don that she would drop Kate's house key in his mailbox on her way home and she wanted to beat him there so she wouldn't have to answer any questions yet. She wanted to be fully prepared when that time came. |
