| It is an exciting time to be a Mustang fan. Not only is there more and more Mustang drivers on the road, but the factory seems to have a never-ending supply of new Mustangs to continue to raise the performance bar. If you had told me back in '84 that in '04 we would be looking at three performance varities of the Mustang each more powerful than the last. Or that there would be a factory car with 425 err, I mean 390 (yeah right) horsepower. I would have thought the guys in the white coats were long overdue. I mean look back at the mark, not too far back now. I am talking about the late 70's. Yeah, it was a dark time. Now, some might be saying "at least it's not that Mustang II" but still the performance was dismal. When the performance model is a turbo 4 you know things are dim. (No hate mail, now the SVO was and is a great model, it's just not a fire-breathing V8 that we know and love) It wasn't until '87 that the performance came back. But even then for those of us who were there can attest to the performance wasn't stellar. Back then for a street car to go 14's it was something. Back then there weren't hundreds of parts houses like there are now. Most of the guys pounding the pavement weren't sure that the move to fuel injection was such a good thing. Now fast forward to the present. Who would have thought back then you could go to the local dealership (SVT approved, of course) and pick up a car that with exhaust a smaller pulley and slicks could go 11's. We should feel blessed. We have the GT. 260 horsepower. With simple tricks it can go low 13's. The Mach 1. 300 horsepower. With some tricks on that one you've got a 12 second car. And then the big daddy. The '03 Cobra. Just think about it, if you took this back in time to '87 you would be a god. Even stone stock. So when you are at the dealership buying your next toy pinch yourself, and make sure you're not dreaming. -Rick Hill |
