What kinds of fish do you like:
Do you want a colorfull community tank with lots of different kinds of fish, a species tank with one or two fish, perhaps a breeding pair, or anything in between.
There are definately some do's and don'ts when it comes to mixing fish:
Do's:
Fish that shoal, schooling fish, should be kept in schools. (6 or more)
These include Danios, Tetras, Barbs and Cory Cats.
Fish of similar sizes work best together.
Fish with similar land of origin and similar water conditions should be kept together.
Don'ts:
Agressive fish with dosile fish.
(unless they are to be used as feeders)
Mix water types. (freshwater, brackish and marine)
Buy fish that will grow large without planning to grow large with it.
(some fish look small when you buy them, only to grow to a size that is much to big for their original aquarium if you do not plan on increasing tank sizes for the fish, pick accordingly)

The Dogface Puffer: A Marine Fish that is very aggresive and should be kept in a species tank.
The Freshwater Angel Fish requires a tall tank to fully grow it's beautiful fins.
Tetras make very good community fish, they are fairly small and very colorful.
(Left: Neons  Right: Serpae Tetras)
The Jewel is a very agressive type of Cichlid and should be kept in a frshwater species tank.
Bottom feeders help clean your tank by eating the food that makes it to the bottom of the tank. (Albino Cory Cats above, are best kept in groups of 4 or more)
