When Southern's 4501 Mikado was being rebuilt and the lighter 722 Consolidation was passed on to another railroad, Southern contracted to used this heavy C&O KANAWHA for excursion trips. It was painted Southern colors with the Southern name painted on the tender. In the days of steam Southern never had an engine exactly like 2617; however, this powerful engine more than suited Southern's excursion requirements.
