One of the coolest musical fusions that I'm digging right now is the Spanish bagpiper Hevia (real name Jose Angel Hevia Velasco). He uses both the traditional Asturian Spanish bagpipes and the Electronic pipes, his own invention. On these pipes, he plays mostly traditional tunes from his homeland, tunes sounding both Celtic and Spanish at the same time. He then layers that with his own whistle playing, creating a two-layer sound that establishes the basic tune. After that's done, you get world percussion, stuff from Europe, the Middle East, Iberia...all over. Then you get all kinds of other instruments: tambourines, fiddles, guitars, electronica, and various voices and sounds from all over the world, especially the middle east and Spain. So what you get is a mix, based on Latin and Celtic sounds but including international sounds. Oh, and occassionally he'll bring out an actual pipe band, which is really cool! |
