A good friend of mine, and a fellow music lover, taught me about Jeff Buckley.  He was the son of 60's and 70's folk singer Tim Buckley, who died in 1975.  Even with his father's legacy, Jeff managed to make a good name for himself in the music world in the mid-90's.  He released one studio album, Grace, in 1994.  The songs I've heard from it are spectacular, and this album is what made Buckley a star.  After Grace, Buckley toured often and worked on songs for a future album.  Unfortunately, he was never able to finish the album, because he died in a tragic drowning accident in the Mississippi River on May 29, 1997.  He was in Memphis, Tenn. at the time.  His death was a HUGE loss to music and the world.  We can only guess what heights Jeff's talent might have reached, but as it is we only have the material he made while living, but WHAT wonderful material!!

Jeff's trademark was his haunting, emotional voice.  It seemed his voice had few limits; any one song could start with a crooning whisper and end up in a pain-filled scream.  He was also an excellent guitarist who could go beyond familar chords and give each of his songs a real depth.  In my mind, Jeff's songs weren't "songs":  they were journeys into the mind and heart of a REAL human being who put himself into each song because that was what he needed to do, not because he needed to sell more albums.
My favorite Jeff Buckley songs so far are "Hallelujah," "Grace," and "Last Goodbye."
My review of "Grace"
