Daniels 70 weeks
The portion of Daniel's book called "Daniels 70 weeks" are found in Daniel 9:24-27. It is the spoken message of the angel Gabriel in response to Daniels prayer. Daniel had been studying the book of Jeremiah and read that Israel was to lie desolate in bondage for 70 years. Daniel was living under Babylonian control and was praying for forgiveness for his people as he was living in this time of desolation, and asked what was to come. God loved Daniel very much and sent Gabriel with the message of the "70 weeks".
Here is the message (verse by verse explanation will follow)
Daniel 9:24 "A period of seventy sets of seven has been decreed for your people and your holy city to put down rebellion, to bring and end to sin, to atone for guilt, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to confirm the prophetic vision, and to anoint the Most Holy Place.
Daniel 9:25 Now listen and understand! Seven set of seven plus sixty two sets of seven will pass from the time the command is given to rebuild Jerusalem until the Anointed One comes. Jerusalem will be rebuilt with streets and strong defenses, despite perilous times.
Daniel 9:26 After this period of sixty-two sets of seven the Anointed One will be killed appearing to have accomplished nothing, and a ruler will arise whose armies will destroy the city and the Temple. The end will come with a flood, and a war and it's miseries are decreed from that time to the very end.
Daniel 9:27 He will make a treaty with the people for a period of one set of seven, but after half this time, he will put an end to the sacrifices and offerings. Then as a climax to all his terrible deeds, he will set up a sacrilegious object that causes desecration, until the end that has been decreed is poured out on this defiler.
Explanations-
Verse 24:
1. The prophecy affects the nation Israel and Jerusalem.
2. The end of the seventy weeks will bring blessings that will also affect
the Gentiles.
3. The "70 weeks" are not weeks of days. "Shabua" is the Hebrew word used
here and it means "sevens" So 70 weeks are 70 sevens or 490 years.
(This manner of speaking was common in that day. We see this use in
Genesis 29:27: "One week" was seven years).
Genesis 29:27 "Fulfill her week, and we will give you this one also for
the service which you will serve with me still another seven years."
Verse 25:
1. This verse gives us the starting date for figuring the 490 years and
will also tell us the time that Jesus will enter Jerusalem as king.
2. "The commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem"  is the command
given by King Artaxerxes in Nehemiah 2:1-8. Nehemiah has the only
reference to restoring and building. Other commands, such as in Ezra,
refer to the Temple, not the city. Using Ezra makes for wrong calculations
as to when events were to happen.
Using Nehemiah's starting point, we find that secular history gives us
March 14, 445 B.C. for Xerxes' command and 69 weeks later (483 years) Jesus
entered Jerusalem as king on April 6, 32 A.D. Luke reports that Jesus
wept because the people did not recognize that this was the day and event
prophesied by Daniel.
Verse 26:
"Flood" means overflowing).
"Desolations" refers to devastations; making waste).
1. After the 69 weeks but before the 70th week was to begin,
Jesus would be cut off (crucified)
2. And still before the 70th week was to begin, the people of the prince
would come and destroy Jerusalem. The Romans did this.
Since Jesus enters Jerusalem as king after the 69th week but before the
70th week and Jerusalem was destroyed many years later but also before the
70th week, we have a period of time between the weeks, waiting for the 70th
week to appear. We have a gap of time here.
This gap is believed to be the church age.
Verse 27:
The "he" here is the Antichrist. Unknown at this time. This person will
make a covenant (Contract) for one week which is seven years. The first
three and a half years will be peaceful. Then he will cause sacrifices to
stop and the next three and a half years will be the Tribulation period
with its world-wide judgments.
After the 70th week the blessing from verse 24 will come:
1. To finish transgressions.
2. Make an end of sins.
3. Make reconciliation for iniquity.
4. Bring in everlasting righteousness and peace.
5. Seal up visions and prophecies.
6. Anoint the Most Holy.
Since none of the above has happened, the 70th week is still future.
The 70th week of Daniel will begin not with the rapture of the church but with the seven year covenant of peace between the Anti-Christ and Israel.
