God started the REVOLUTION by killing our old self. Now it's our responsibility to keep sin and Satan from dominating our lives. God changed our nature; now it's up to us to change our behavior and "put to death the misdeeds of the body"(Romans 8:13).
It's not as easy as it sounds. Take a look at Romans 7:15-23; it talks about the struggle against sin. I'll break it down for ya:
Romans 7:15-16 "I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do. And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good." Notice there's only one player in those verses - the "I" mentioned nine times.
Romans 7:20 "Now if I do what I do not want to do [sin], it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it." Now there's two players involved - 'sin' and 'me.' Sin lives in me and prevents me from doing what I want to do(God's will). Whenever that happens, I'm responsible for 1)allowing sin to reign and 2)getting rid of it. These verses don't say I'm no good, or evil, or sin. They say there's something in me that's evil and sinful - but it's not me. I'm not sin and I'm not a sinner, I'm a saint who has allowed sin to reign in my body.
This war between sin and me takes place in the inner being (see Romans 7:22-23). The good news is, it's a winnable war!
Winning the victory over sin has two parts to it. First, we have to learn to base our behavior on our new nature, which is joined to Christ's nature. (See "The REVOLUTIONARY Lists" for a complete description of this.)
The second part to victory over sin is to be "transformed by the renewing of your mind"(see Romans 12:2). How do we do that? By filling our minds with God's word, first and most importantly. Colossians 3: 16 tells us a little more about that: "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God." The more you read about and know the truth, the more you can recognize Satan's lies. Expose the lie, and you win the battle!
