 The LTD by Rev Lover

I carefully looked the LTD over. I was in very nice condidtion. The only thing I could see that was much, was that the mufflers had quite a few small rust holes. So did the tailpipes. I could hear a light buzzing from them and since it was cold the steamy exhaust was leaking out of the holes. I mentioned it, but the guy didn't say anything about price.

I was interested as hell in the car. It was the size I was looking for and the powerful 390 with dual exhausts would sound super when I revved it up. I told him I wanted to drive it. He said he couldn't leave the lot. I told him my 240Z would be on his lot if I was in his Ford. I left the "Z" keys with him and took the Ford out for a spin. It drove nice. I would have to get used to the size, but I liked it. I tested the brakes and steering. Everything seemed fine. I drove out into the country and the Ford cruised beautifully with a faint purr from the dual pipes. Then it was time to see how it ran.

I stopped in the road, put it in neutral and revved it up several times. It sounded sweet and a lot of black smoke blew out of the pipes. It hadn't been run in a long time. I put it in low and stood on the gas. The old girl jumped to life spinning the tires and starting to roar. I kept my foot on the floor and it accelerated hard. It started to rev in low gear and roar louder through the pipes. A huge trail of gray smoke was pouring out of the back as it revved higher. We got to the lot and I paid for the LTD and we were ready to go. I was going to drive it because of the mufflers in case a cop stopped it. Mark didn't know how to drive a stick though so he couldn't drive the "Z". He was going to have to drive the LTD. I would follow him and if we were careful it would be OK. We made it to my house fine. The LTD was very cooperative and almost mellow. If you weren't jumping it the exhausts weren't real loud.

I put it in the driveway and told Mark I needed to go to the auto parts store to see if they had any mufflers that would fit. He said OK and headed for his apartment. I went to the NAPA store. They had a short glasspack that would fit the LTD if I used an adaptor pipe when the tailpipes were hooked up. I had looked and the tailpipes were shot too so I needed mufflers and pipes. They had to order the tailpipes and adaptor pipes. I got the mufflers but still need to extend back from them to at least the tailpipe mounts to hold everything up. I looked around and the store had 5 foot pieces of straight tubing. I decided to try something for fun. The mufflers were 2 inch diameter. They had some 3 inch diameter tubing. I got a 2 inch to 3inch size changer and two 5 foot long straight pipes.

I put the LTD in the garage on the jack stands and cut all of the old stuff off. Then I clamped the mufflers to the header pipes, which was where they would stay. Then I started to create my temporary extension pipes. I put the 2 inch to 3 inch adaptors in the mufflers. Then I took one of the 3 inch pipes and slid it on. The pipe went past the rear muffler mount so that some heavy wire would work to hold it up. The pipe extended under the rear end of the car almost to the back of the trunk. It looked strangely cool. This big 3 inch straight pipe hanging low under the car.

I slid the other one on just as Mark showed up. The LTD now had two huge pipes under the back. I wired the pipes to the mounts which raised them up tight under the rear axle, while we talked. He wanted to know why I had put the big pipes on. I told him that the actual tailpipes had to be ordered and that I needed something out of the mufflers. I explained that I just wanted to goof around with these until I could put the tailpipes on. If the car hit a big bump and the axle lifted the axle would bump pipes. The mounts had rubber in them so it looked like it would work. Mark made the comment that the pipes looked awesome. I finished and got out from under to see for my self. Mark was right the pipes in their own way looked really cool. I took the car off the jack stands to see the full effect.

There sat a rather normal looking LTD except for two huge pipes jutting out from under the rear end. The pipes hung low to the ground, maybe too low. Mark kept going on about how cool they looked and how they were going to sound. I needed change the angle or they would get knocked off, so I put the rear of the car back on the jack stands. I took the pipes off and put slight bend in each of them by cutting them at an angle and then welding them with the acetylene torch. Mark was still hanging around.
