Ethiopian Orthodox Church
The Ethiopian Church is located on the Rehov HaNeviim [Prophets' Street], close to the ultra orthodox Jewish quarter of Mea Shearim. This round Church is very beautiful and is based upon the structure of the Temple of Jerusalem.
Moreover, the Ethiopians use various Jewish symbols - including the Magen David [Star of David] inside marvelous silver or gold Crosses in the shape of the sun, the moon and the natural elements.
The Ethiopians have been present in Jerusalem since the very beginning of Christianity. They claim to have a special link to Jewish tradition since the Queen of Sheba visited King Salomon to listen to his wisdom. She returned to Ethiopia with their baby, Menelik.
The Ethiopian ancient Orthodox Church was influenced by the Greeks, the Syrians and the Copts as well as by the Jews living in Yemen. Their chanting recalls the old tradition of prayer murmuring and glossolalia [speech in tongues] as well as the worldwide spread "reggae" rhythm.
Many representatives of various denominations came. Among the faithful some Ethiopian Israelis are always present since they are absolutely not reluctant to show their appurtenance to both Jewish and Christian realms.
H. E. Archbishop Aba Kuostos quietly led the prayer in a very warm atmosphere.
