hat makes a headshot stand out from the crowd? What magical
trick does it take to get in the casting directors’ door and instead of your
photo getting thrown in the trash?
The Photographer is
the first key in a series of getting auditions. Without a great shot, you are
out of the loop. There are thousands of actresses and actors already vying for
the same job that you want. Your photo must have something that makes you stand
out from the rest.
How do you do that?
Your eyes have to have “it!” The eyes are the windows to the soul. So you have
to radiate what you are selling through your eyes and then let it translate to
the camera.
All photographers
are not created equal. Some are great indoors with artificial lighting. Others
are great in natural light. There are many who are great with both. But one
thing for sure, there is a number of variables that can make your photo shoot
successful or not.
Chemistry is
important. There are photographers that are sleazy. Let’s be real. If you get
the wrong vibe, do yourself a favor and don’t shoot with them. You will waste
your time and money. And your discomfort will read through the photos.
Find a photographer
from referrals or from doing your own homework via online searches, friends,
printing companies (Quality Reproductions, Paper Chase, Nardulli's or Ray the Retoucher) and some
trade papers like BackStage West.
Also it is
important to know what look you want to portray. Every actor has a range of
characters that they are most likely to be cast. Find your range and then focus
on getting photos that reflect those “types”.
Futhermore, there are alot of successful photographers out there who do assemblyline shooting. They shoot you fast and don't care about getting your best shot. They care about getting your money as fast as possible. You can tell who these photographers are easily because a majority of their shots have the same background and the same look.
