Western Lolita vs Eastern Lolita & EGA vs EGL;
| EGA | EGL | Fabrics | Hair & Make-up | Atitude |
~:::~

EGA stands for Elegant Gothic Aristocrat. Meaning any Gothic & Dark minded individual who is dressed more conservatively (read: covers EVERY inch of skin below the neck...and the neck itself...and that includes the all important...gloves.), but JUST as ornately decorated as the Lolitas.

EGL is Elegant Gothic Lolita. Any lady or gentlemen who wishes to be in a dress. A fancy, ruffled, flounced and layered puff of a dress. Which can be ANY manner of colors and fabrics. As long as it's puffy, it's got tons and tons of lace, cute little ties all over the damned place and is above the knee, it's probably EGL.

Both EGA and EGL are names Mana came up with (and the ONLY thing he came up with involving the fashion, let me just repeat myself.) to divide the "Gothic" Lolita look. Gothic Lolita itself is a sub group of the Classical/Country Lolita. Initially, the Classical/Country Lolita was the prevailing look. It was copied and improved, copied some more and improvised and on and on, until it was almost a group of its own.

Only to have Mana bust out with his floral thigh highs, adorable head gear, six inch platform mary janes, his sausage curls, and probably trademarked and registered, laser precise, le Blue make up. That was when all Hell broke loose. Gothic Lolita exploded onto the Japanese fashion scene.

EGA and EGL became a fashionable...and common term...for those in the know. *rolls eyes* As one Gothic Fashion magazine put it.

The only thing that I can see different about western Gothic Lolita is the amount of
fabrics (You see LOTS of netting, petticoats worn on the outside, instead of inside with a "real" skirt on top. The gathering of said fabrics. Japanese goth lolis are VERY, VERY full. Where as western it's...eh...not there.), different TYPES of materials OF the fabric (i.e. vinyl in west. goth. loli., instead of cotton or even silk velvet.) and even different types of accessories (western goth is VERY into Industrial looks. Spikes, collars, leather/pvc straps, rigid corsets with expensive silk chinese brocade. The Japanese are more into soft cottons, silks and plenty of lace and big, BIG purses. Suitcases is what I think when I see them.)

Hair and makeup.That is where I see the most startling difference.

Western Lolitas cake on their make up. Where as only the Mana cosplayers in Japan or Mana-tics where them. Most Lolitas, including the Gothic Lolitas don't wear a lot of make up. A nice, red lip gloss, black eye liner and that's it. No funky purple, green, fuschia eye shadows, no brilliant red lipsticks. Not that it isn't cute or even beautiful, but the Japanese just don't do that.

Hair. *giggles* I haven't seen many Japanese Gothic Lolitas with nuclear green hair or nappy, braided ponytails with massive hair pieces stuck into the hair. How's that for an eye catching difference? What about the nappy, braided hair in ponytails with PLASTIC tube extentions? Yep. I've seen that and DAMN do they look good. But that's because of the atitude of the girl who was wearing it. It would NOT have looked good if a meek, chin-down-looking-up- through-the-eye-lash Japanese Loli was wearing it. It would look horribly ridiculous and we KNOW the Japanese are anything but.

Although, a sub group of the lolita look is coming out with wacked out color schemes in Japan. It's not catching on as far as I can see. The next time I go into a Japanese Lolita fashion site and see girls bunched together with Neon pink hair or electric blue bangs with midnight blue hair, then I know the fad is catching on.

Atitude...atitude. Atitude.

The Western Goth are VERY, VERY self assure. VERY, VERY in your face, hands on hips, sneering and we're-here-to-stay-mess-with-us-and- you'll-find-yourself-with-no-teeth-two-black-eyes-and-kissing-the- asphalt-we-strut-on atitude.

Whereas the Japanese are into the more innocent look. Their toes point in, their hands are clasped on their laps or against their bossoms or even better, holding what looks like a suitcase against their sides, looking lost, lonely and a bit intimidated, while their skirts are riding up their thighs...higher and higher as each girl shyly looks at you through a veil of curls, pouts at you with overglossed lips and their strike pose of I'm-a-defensless-lolita- girl-who's-skirt-length-is-mysteriously-getting-indecently-shorter- and-shorter-every-time-the-camera-flashes-and-no-I'm-not-doing-it-on- purpose-so-please-don't-hurt-me atitude.

*rolls on my back, giggling* Sorry. I'm not a very good candidate for a lolita. Any kind of Lolita. Accept for the original Vladimir Naborov's Lolita...but that's another story and it's not very appropriate here. *blinks* as if this fashion is. *grins*

I love the look and therefore...I'll wear whatever I want. ~_^Y
