Hunter Cat

The path you've taken ends, not in some wild outdoor setting, but at a drab blue door on the side of a plain cement building. It's the only feature you can see to mar the structure's rough white surface. Having nothing else to do, you place your hand on the dull gold handle, turn, and push your way inside.

You squint into the dim light. Vaguely you can make out some sort of stairway leading down into the ground, and you can see that only because of the light seeping in through the doorway. Then the opening shuts behind you, and you are left alone complete darkness, unaware of anything around you.

You stand still in shock as goosebumps break out over your body. Then you whirl around to tug at the door, fumbling for the handle, when suddenly...

A light flips on.

You whirl around again, a bit dizzy, ready to face whatever it was that switched the light on. But nothing's there. After a tense second, you slowly look around for a switch that you might have bumped, or a motion detector you've activated.

And yes, there it is. A small lightswitch on the wall, close to the floor and barely noticeable, since it's the exact same color as the rest of the hall. You must have hit it in your scramble at the door.

You stand there uncomfortably, peering around. The lights appear to continue down the stairs. Should you follow them...?

You walk down the stairs.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When you reach the bottom, your eyes widen in amazement. What you see is basically a barren, underground landscape. Well... That's what it looks like. As far as you can tell, the only parts of it that are real are the water and the rocks. Foamy--yet sturdy, by the looks of them--artificial trees sprout out of the brown floor. Soft 'vegetation' is also present, made of an odd material. It feels almost real, but it's brittle and snaps apart at the slightest force. Where the small stream runs is obviously a container of plastic to keep the liquid from seeping into the ground.
Not until you take a step out into the scenery do you realize the ground is not what it seems.
As you place your foot before you, it sinks into the odd material, then--with surprising force--hurls you back up again. You scramble to get your feet under you and bent to counteract the odd flooring. Unfortunately, where you land the ground is hard. You fall to the floor, crushing fragile 'plants' beneath you.
You take deep breaths and look around again. Gingerly, you press into the ground before you. It's springy, but not nearly so much as the part you first encountered. What kind of a room is this?
You look behind you, then scramble forward, away from what you see. If you'd fallen any farther, you would have landed in the water.
Then you look beyond the stream.
From two large holes in the far wall--one at ground level, and one placed right in the middle of the wall, only reachable by flight--come two very odd felines.
The one standing in the high hole narrows its eyes and sizes you up. After a moment, it leaps to the ground, breaking the fall with its large wings. You gape at it openly. Its body is covered in colors of all kinds, seemingly with no pattern whatsoever. Some of the markings are so bright you can't stare at them for too long; they hurt your eyes. Was this truly a natural being?
The second, green creature 'meows' uncertainly, flicking its ears and tail. This was also an unusual being; its fur sparkles, and unnatural colors stripe its back and legs. As it takes a step farther into the room, you hear a 'clop' from its back hoof. Apparently the tunnel was more solid than this floor.
Then the two start walking tentatively forward. They seem to have the terrain marked out in their mind; when its solid, they walk normally, and they put just the right spring in their step where the floor gets that odd texture. As they advance, you stand and brush yourself off. You glance behind you. You weren't exactly eager to step back where you'd bounced before.
They leap across the stream and stand before you, stances uncertain and ready for whatever you do. Well, you don't do anything except stand there and watch them the same way. Eventually, the one with the sparkly coat lies down and starts to purr, still staring up at you. A minute more, and the rainbow-colored one starts slowly walking in the direction of the stairs you entered from. There's no mistaking the posture and position of this cat; it wants you to leave. Wait--how could you get that impression from a cat? Or whatever this was. Shrugging uncomfortably, you gather yourself for a leap. You don't quite make the stairway, instead landing in the springy spot you sought to avoid. It sucks you in, then spits you out again into the stairwell. That was actually kind of fun!
You make your way up the stairs, through the hall, turn out the light, and shut the door.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

(But wait, there's more!)

Actually, while you did make your way up the stairs, it was not intentional, you did not go through the hall, you did not turn off the light, and you didn't even come close to the door. Not yet, anyway.

What happened went more like this:

You stagger as you hit the base of the stairs, stumbling from the force and angle of your flight through the air. Flinging out your hands, you try to brace your crash into the steps, but you only partially succeed. As your hands hit the stairs, something gives way beneath your right one, setting you even more off-balance than you previously had been. You topple painfully to the ground.

Gasping for breath, you open your eyes. There appear to be no serious injuries; just countless scrapes and future bruises. Glancing around from where you lie, you see what had given way beneath your weight. It's a small stone button, hardly noticeable, marked 'wall.'

Well, the wall seems not to have changed at all, and if it was going to, you did not mean to be here when it did. Groaning, you push yourself up with weakened, stinging arms, turn around - and stare.

It appears the button has done something after all. The right wall has turned transparent, showing another room identical to the first. You would almost believe it was the same room, except that that would be physically impossible.

As you watch, the two felines from before fly/walk out of their separate holes. They cross the river together, but then separate, moving toward two other beings you hadn't seen before. They group together by color.

Squinting, you move - with another groan - to a spot where the glare from lights above doesn't obscure the groups. The green cats walk side by side across the springy ground, looking content and appreciative of the other's companionship. The multi-colored pair greet each other in another manner. More like family, maybe? Hmm...

As you muse over this new thought, you hear three sharp clicks and the wall is suddenly as opaque as ever. Grumbling, you attempt to press down the button again, but it won't budge. Sighing, you push yourself up the stairs, wincing with each step. And now, finally:

You make your way through the hall, turn out the light, and shut the door.
