Hunter Cat

You wander through a dripping rainforest, cold, shivering, and wet. It just had to rain today, didn't it? You sigh and journey on, being careful to avoid the muddy puddles set inconveniently in the path. Then, through the trees, you catch a glimpse of color. Eh, probably just some sodden flowers. But then the color moves, traveling lightly in a way no flower could. What was that? Frowning thoughtfully, you stumble toward it.

Soon, you reach a clearing. Stopping, you think back to what you had seen... Yes, this had to be the place. But, looking around, you see no color. Just glum, drooping, wet vegetation. And more of those darn puddles. Grr. They were really getting on your nerves.

Then, seemingly from nowhere, two felines come tumbling out of the trees. The black one is playfully leaping after the purple, trying to pin her down in the mud. Not that you can see it would make any difference; they're both quite muddy already. You gape as they leap around, completely engrossed in their childish play. You gape as they leap about, splashing you with slimy mud.

As the predicament of your clothes and yourself sinks in, you gasp angrily and step back, away from them. Right into a large, wet puddle. AAARGH! The stupid puddles! You fling yourself away and stomp over to the cover of the trees. Of course, stomping just throws up more mud. What luck.

Angry thoughts snarl and tangle in your head, raving about the rain. And you let yourself be taken by them, leaning against a drenched tree trunk. They don't have hold on you for long, though, as a long, fluffy, purplish tail drops down beside your cheek.

Shrieking, you leap away and look frantically to the branches above, where you see two male hunter cats, peering down at you with creepily, intent eyes.

Then the purple one breaks eye contact with you, stretching stylishly on his branch before licking his fur clean. If it could be any cleaner - it sparkled!

Seeing him occupied, and his companion as still as before, you take this opportunity to assess your surroundings. As much as you could see without moving your head more than an inch. You didn't want the cats in the tree to have any unnecessary advantages, should they decide they wanted you dirtier than you were at present. But then, with the one's obssession with his fur, perhaps maybe escape from the mud was why they were in the tree in the first place.

Then your searching eyes discern two more shapes among the foliage. Two more hunter cats, peering at you with cocked heads and curious expressions. Actually, now that you look closely, their coats sparkled as well, despite the fact that they were covered in dirt. The lucky cats. They got to be clean and dirty at the smae time! Annoyed, you scuff your shoe in the dirt.

Then yet another thing catches your eye. Or another lack of something, to be precise. The two first felines, the ones that had splattered mud on you, have stopped moving and are eyeing you just the same as all the other cats. Well, except for the purple male, who is still obssessed with his fur.

Overall, you're quite uncomfortable. You're being stared at by five strange creatures, you're wet, you're cold, you're tired, and you're muddy. You were getting pretty edgy.

Slowly, you start backing away - though you almost stop when, at your first step, the purple male jerks his head to stare with the others - and, to your relief, the creatures let you go. Back away, back away... And thankfully, for once, with no puddles in your path. Finally, you get back to the trail, where you contemplate cleaning up back home - wouldn't that be lovely! - or continuing on, to the other edge of the small forest.

Eventually, you reach the conclusion that, if you were going to get any dirtier, it might as well be now. With a regretful shiver, you continue on.
