| Movie Review of "The Others" (continued) Nicole tutors her children by candlelight. I guess they cant go to school since theyre allergic to light. She really is quite a strict teacher. And a very devout Catholic as well, as we learn in this scene. Im pretty sure these factors all combine to explain her dress sense here. Nicholas makes trouble, and she decides to separate the two children. Bad idea, Nicole. You know somethings gonna happen. These things always do. Have you not seen any scary movies at all? No, Nicole, dont. Dont do it! This is your last warning. Something will happen. We hear crying noises from nowhere. Nicole rushes around, locking and unlocking, dragging her curtain behind her as she flies from one room to another. Nicholas is alright. Anne! She runs upstairs to the music room. Anne is reading. But someone was crying, damnit, and Nicole wants to know who it was! Anne says its a boy that she sees thats doing the crying, but Nicole will never believe her. Anne scares me, so I dont know how Nicole can just not be scared at all. Anne is clearly not joking. BUT IS SHE? Were into the action. Piano starts playing on its own, people talk, the children get scared, noises come from upstairs. We dont see any ghosts, but Im on the edge of my seat nonetheless. Anne sees things, apparently. Nicole delivers a line How am I expected to embroider in such poor light? which is a line I dont think Nicole Kidman herself ever imagined saying, like ever. The girl playing Anne has this scary look to her. Just like Haley Joel Osment in The Sixth Sense. Man, what if Haley and Anne end up getting married? Thatd be scary. Theyd have scary children and raise scary dogs and cats. Go away, Haley. Im scaring myself thinking about it already. Yikes! That was scary. I cant tell you what it was, but Nicole uncovers some photographs and some old paintings. Seriously, Im not sure what Amenabar is trying to tell us. Hes not actually giving us too much information. I really dont see what the big twist could be. More scary stuff. The children cry. Housekeeper looks scary. She seems to know whats going on, this Housekeeper, only shes speaking in code with Gardener. Oh, shes scheming to get the house back or something, this Housekeeper, I knew she was up to no good. Poor Nicole. Shes trying to get a priest to clean the place, because Housekeeper is not doing a good enough job of it. She walks away from the house. Thank goodness. Were away from the haunted house. I can breathe easy for a few minutes, I imagine. I hope. Okay, Nicole walks into what must stand as the record in the Guinness Book Of Records for Quickest Fog To Form - 1945 in Jersey, apparently. She meets her husband along the way, back from the war. Happy reunion in the fog. Nicole brings Husband home, and Housekeeper looks crestfallen for some reason. This Housekeeper what is she up to? Is she going to kill Husband soon to rid the obstacle? Nicole is happy and smiles, first and last time in the movie. Husband slams the door while Nicole prepares lunch. Her smile disappears. Whats with the husband? If I were coming home from years in the war to Nicole Kidman, Id slam the door only when Nicole has entered the room. Oh, damn. Husbands gay, isnt he? Poor Nicole. She must know how that feels. Um, I mean, now that shes not married anymore. I dont know what all of you were thinking. More scary scenes. Yes, I saw them. I just dont want to spoil it for the rest of you. Nicole goes to talk to Husband. Husband wants to go back to the war. Nicole shrieks, The war is over! Hey, Nicole, I think Husband means go back to his army buddies. Damn, he really is gay, isnt he? He kisses Nicole, some stripping ensues but we never really see what happens next (hmm...), and then, the following day, hes gone. Nicole freaks out. She runs into the garden and tries to look for him. Then she hears screams from the children. I think people in the audience were screaming as well. Run, Nicole, run! Housekeeper might be killing your poor babies! Right, were into the tail end now. The things that happen here will most certainly spoil the movie for those of you who have yet to see it. But I bet I got you intrigued at least a little bit. So do me (and Nicole) a favour and go watch this movie when it comes out. Watch a second time if you need to. Then come back and read the review again, and see what little things I dropped for you along the way. R.D.s Rating : An Oscar-worthy performance by Nicole, a brilliant plot, and a twist youd probably never see coming give The Others a RAWKING DAWG star status. Its better than The Sixth Sense, people, so go see it. (Sound off! Tell me what you thought of the movie here.) (Whats a rawking dawg? Check out R.D.s rating system here.) |
