A Love Story
CHAPTER FIVE
When James didnt appear, Michelle began to get worried. This isnt like him, Remus. I wonder where he is?
Remus thought hed try to be helpful, so he called out for James as well. Suddenly, from way above their heads, they both heard a pitiful cry.
Mommy? They both looked up, and Remus had just enough time to grab Michelles arm before she fell to the ground in shock.
Oh my God, Michelle whispered. Hes up so high! James began to cry, rather loudly, as it were, from the topmost branch of the highest tree in Michelles backyard. How am I gonna get him down? Michelle said, almost to herself.
Remus took one look at her and knew she was scared out of her wits, and quite frankly, was going to be no help whatsoever in getting her son down from the tree. He conjured a chair out of thin air, and made Michelle sit down. Then he yelled up for James to hold tight and not to move. Remus knelt down and asked Michelle where she kept her broom.
To which Michelle replied faintly, Broom? Why do you need a broom?
Because the only way I can see getting him down safely is to fly up to the top and climb down and get him. If we blast the branches out of the way, he may fall from the blast. Where is your broom? Remus asked her again.
On the back porch, leaning up against the house, said Michelle. Remus charged into the house and was back only moments later, broom in hand. Without missing a beat, Remus climbed on to the broom and flew straight up to the top of the tree.
Now James, listen to me, this is very important. I am going to come down and get you. I dont want you to do a thing except wait for me to grab you up, understand?
Yeah, said James, who had forgotten his fright at the sight of Remus on his mothers broom. He loved to fly, positively loved it. For a boy of his age, he was good at it too. Whenever his mother actually let him have a go at it, that is. Remus left the broom to hover in mid-air, and made his way down the two or three feet to James. He grabbed the boy up, and had him piggy-backed so that both of his hands were free to grab to the branches and climb up. Once on the broom, Remus took his time flying back down, seeing how much joy James was getting out of it, but regretted that decision almost at once at the look on Michelles face.
She was positively gray, or blue, or whatever color you call it when someone is about to pull a fainting spell on you. Remus let James get off the broom first, and then told the boy to put it back inside the house. As James began to walk to his mother, Michelle made as if to stand up and hug him, but instead, she fell to the ground. The last good thought she would remember is of the two of them landing safely. Remus tried to catch her in time, but to no avail. Instead, he picked her up, surprised at how light she was, and at the same time, how much strength he had. Usually, only one day past the full moon like this, he was as weak as a newborn unicorn.
Remus carried her up the pathway to the house, stopping only long enough to allow James time to open the door for them. As he gingerly lay her down on the couch, a small, unconscious sigh escaped her lips, and Remus had the sudden, strong urge to kiss them. Stop it, Remus told himself, she wouldnt want you anyway, and besides, James is standing right here.
Remus, said James. Is mommy gonna be ok?
Of course she is, replied Remus. I just need to wake her up and maybe get her a strong cup of tea, and shell be fine.
Cause she passed out, right? said James.
Remus chuckled to himself and replied, Thats right. Looking at James worried face, Remus added, Well, we better wake her up then, huh? James nodded his agreement, and Remus pointed his wand at Michelle and said, Innervate!
