Floors: Sealing floors. All floors and floor surfaces should be sealed so they stay cleaner
and are less damaged. Here's a handy guide on when and how.
Please read this first.
-
Concrete: seal a month or two after pouring, ideally. But if not, clean
well with a heavy dusty degreaser. Rinse well. Let dry a couple of days
- no less. It must be completely dry. Then apply two medium coats of
a sealer (Crete-Tech, etc). For places where you want an extra gloss,
use a commercial wax over the seal.
-
Wood: clean, then sand lightly with a commercial buffer and sanding
screen. Apply a couple of coats of polyurethane. Wood floor sealers
seal bare wood. Then you can mop and wax like any other floor.
Check here to test if your wood is already sealed.
-
Vinyl: even no-wax floors need protective coating. Waxing makes it
safer to walk on. Maintain with a commercial wax.
-
Stone/tile: Get the grout sealed with a permanent seal. Most tiles are
hardy and will withstand wear. Use polyurethane diluted with paint
thinner so it penetrates grout but leaves little on the surface.
-
No matter the floor type, don't use too strong a cleaner.
-
Use a neutral cleaner to mop.
