Here we are again, with another totally amazing thing you can do with a tee shirt. Who knew these old clothes could be so valuable? I find myself digging through old clothes I want to give away to see what else I can do with them that I might really wear. I found the wrap top really useful, and I have a few throw pillows and bags I made, and the cut aways are totally cool. What else? Think I'm out of ideas already? No way.
Technically, this is number 6 but the number system is going to stay. To compensate, this article will be another two-in-one (#5 and #6). You can make yourself a cute new straight skirt (make the seaon's mini!) and make a matching set of hair accessories too - and all it takes is some simple glue or easy sewing.
T-shirt #5 - THE TEE SKIRT - What you need:
- an old T-shirt, as long as possible.
- good scissors
- needle and thread or a glue gun
- A long ribbon, cloth belt or even yarn
- Safety pin (optional)
How to make it:
1. Cut off the t-shirt under the armpits (save these for #6!). Now measure the length and subtract 2 inches. That's how long the skirt will be. Cut it if you want it shorter. Turn it inside out.
2. Fold a quarter inch in from the top (cut) edge to the outside of the skirt, then fold to 1 3/4 inches down. Sew or glue in place leaving 1/2 inch on one side unsewn - you should have a hole or passage through the length of the cloth almost all the way around.
3. Cut a small half-inch slit in the cloth where you left it unglued or unsewn.
4. Attach a safety pin to your ribbon or yarn (or tie a big knot in it) and thread through the slit.
5. You can cut side slits or sew to make little pleats at the bottom of your skirt.
6. Now slip it on, adjust and pull the drawstring belt, and you have a cute skirt to wear at home or anywhere!
T-shirt #6 - SCRUNCHIES - What you need:
- T-shirt scraps
- good scissors
- needle and thread or a glue gun
- elastic or a strong long rubberband cut so it's straight
How to make it:
1. Cut the scraps about 8 inches long and 2 inches wide (adjust the width and length for how puffy and scrunched you want your scrunchie).
2. Fold the cloth in half lengthwise inside out and straight sew or tack in place. Turn right side out. To glue instead, fold so the right side's out and glue.
3. Thread the elastic through and sew together. You will want a piece 3-4 inches long. If using a rubberband, thread and tie it together.
4. Sew or glue the ends of the cloth together around the elastic, folding so the edges don't show.
5. Decorate if you like, or just use the scrunchie as it is to quickly tie up your hair. Now you can make hair accessories that match what you wear and make them just the way you like!
