The Care Remedy Gift List. If you're looking for the perfect gift for a friend, relative, partner, or other special person in your life, here are a few ideas. They're for any occasion - or for no reason at all. Surprise someone you love, and show them you care.

Please read this first.

  • Send a personalized card. Send a virtual greeting card. You can also make a card yourself by hand, or on your computer and print it out, or go to one of the automated personalized card machines in card and drug stores. A handmade card takes on special meaning and can often be a gift in itself - use popups or your own drawings, or scent it with a special fragrance, or put a picture or gift (like a square of chocolate)inside.

  • Send a poem or story or quote. Write your own poem, or get it written for you. Or get a story made up about the person, or a collection of interesting facts (like a personalized horoscope or information about a special date in their lives). If you don't know quite the right words, let us do this for you, free at the perfect words.

  • Collect pictures. Put together old pictures of the two of you or a group of you together, complete with captions and funny comments. You can add stickers and images cut out from magazines, too, for more color and interest.

  • Send a care package. A care package is a box of things to show you care. Enclose things like comics, candy, photos, books, toys, and a nice letter or card.

  • Give feel-good gifts. These can be things like a massage kit (massage oils, a coupon for a free massage - by you if you like!, rolling massagers), stress-relievers (those squishy balls, chewable pens, Chinese stress balls, smooth rubbing stones, hematite), gift certificates (for the spa, the gym, the mall), lotions and shampoos and perfumes and potpourri and candles, soothing music, or books full of jokes or inspirational thoughts. More ideas are at The Stress Remedy.

  • Give help. Instead of giving the usual wrapped up gift, why not try services instead of things? Offer coupons for a day of quiet, a day alone, a massage, not doing chores (you do them instead), breakfast in bed, etc. Sometimes they are appreciated a lot more.

  • Instead of flowers, give Earth-friendly gifts. Why not give a potted plant? Or a small tree to plant? You can even give plots of rainforest which you can buy in remote rainforest areas (like the Amazon). Donations to charities also make great gifts, like a donation to an environmental organization, or a sponsorship of a child. Usually such groups give out certificates that say "A donation has been made in your name."

  • Give for the person. If it's a newly married couple, think of what they might like - a portrait together to remember their days, a book of poems on love. For a dear friend, maybe a children's book on friends, or a friendship ring. For a graduate, a book like Dr.Seuss' Oh! The Places You'll Go! For a musician, sheet music or a lovely recording. Think about the person, then plan. If you don't know her or him, then think of things that might appeal to anyone - like books of quotes or inspiration, decorative sheets/cushion covers, pretty stationery, artistic pottery or sculpture, elegant candle holders, stuffed animals, special pens, handmade jewelry ... on and on.

  • Inexpensive, not cheap. You don't need to take out a loan to give a gift, even if it's for a very special occasion. All of the gifts mentioned above can be bought inexpensively (definitely less than $50), or for no money at all (especially if you do it yourself). By looking in the right places, you can find antiques or beautiful gifts that might cost more elsewhere, but are in the same condition, or even better - for a better price. Your loved ones don't expect extravagance - and you will find, it really is the thought that counts.

  • Give of yourself. Collect the things around your home that you don't want anymore, or which you don't use, no matter how much you cherish them. Offer people the chance to choose one thing they like, or pick out something to give. If your little sister has been eyeing the poster on your wall, wrap it or frame it and give it to her for her birthday. When you give from your heart, you really show you care.
